Printing problem -- any hints?
Hi, I recently migrated from XP to Windows 7. It seems that the performance of my programs is enhanced for in 7, and so I am quite happy. However, at work, I am stuck with one problem that is related to a printer on the network. I use two printers, one in my subnet, and the other in another subnet. Unfortunately, the one in the other subnet is the one that I mainly use, since it is physically closer to me. Both are HP printers, with their own IP addresses. I can easily print to the one in my subnet, but I cannot get the other one working for me, and neither could our admin guy. From now on, I will only talk only about the second printer, which is problematic. What is strange is that I could add this printer alright, and everything seems to go well during the installation process. After the installation, Windows obviously thinks that the printer is there. I can also ping the printer alright. However, whenver I send a job to that printer, I immediately get the error sign on that printer. This behavior is when I use the raw IP address to access this printer. I also tried to add this printer with an http address, which used to work fine in my XP box, and in that case it takes some time for the error sign to show up. Where do I start to find more information to troubleshoot this problem? I have 64bit Windows 7 installed, and the printer driver seems fine. We don't use domains here, and so my computer is configured as a workgroup computer. One thing a bit odd is that Windows shows a "Toner low" for this printer, despite the fact that the Toner is fine. Oh, another thing: there is a web interface to this printer, and I could do a certain thing like printing a test page from a browser. That actually works.Sam

Try changing the driver to something fairly generic like LaserJet 4.Kerry Brown MS-MVP - Windows Desktop Experience

Hello,I take it that the printers are both HP but different models. If you can ping and browse the Printer through its Web UI, looks like the problem is not network related but driver related. If you get a toner low error at least there is communications going on it just sounds like they don't speak the same language. Are you using Vistax64 drivers?Go to the manufacturers web site and download different version of the driver and see if one of them works.MiguelMiguel Fra www.falconits.com

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. The model of the printer that is giving me trouble is HP 8150DN (on a different subnet). The model of the printer that works fine is HP 2430 (on the same subnet). Unfortunately, different drivers don't seem to help. I am using windows 7 64 bit, so 32 bit drivers won't install. The HP web site has several 64 drivers for 8150 (ps or pcl; 8150 or "universal") and none works. I have also tried the Windows "generic, text only" driver with no success. Yes, I can ping the printer and can browse the printer through its Web UI, but as soon as I send any job, it gives an error. I found out that the previous error message "toner low" that I saw was actually correct, and so I wanted to see if any thing improves if the printer did not have any error conditions at all and then I tried to print it. Yesterday, that toner got replaced, and so the printer is without any error conditions. Still, I cannot print. Trouble shooting in Windows 7 does not give me any hint of what is going on. I am stumped, and would appreciate any suggestions as to how I can diagnose what is wrong here.Sam

Frankly... I'm not sure you can trouble shoot this one. I think it boils down to HP having not yet released drivers for Window 7 64. They say in MOST cases, the Windows Vista 64 drivers will work, but not in all cases; and this seems to be one of those cases. I'm in the same boat you are... except I can't print to ANY printers. It really sucks. I've been searching for a solution, but haven't found any.Actually... to be fair... Windows 7 claims to find a driver for me (I have an HP Deskjet 6540), and it claims to successfully install it. And in truth I can print EXTREMELY simple text documents. But anything other than simple text prints all crazy. If you do find a solution, please let me know.
