Printer shared xp and win 7
I have read the threads on this very problem and tried their solutions but they don't work for me.I have a 32 bit windows xp system with a hp 1200 business inkjet printer. It runs great. I have a new 64 bit laptop running Win 7. The printer will run on the laptop if it is connected locally. The printer is seen by the laptop on the network. When I try to install it on laptop as a shared printer from the network it says it doesn't have a driver. It tries to locat one and can't. I have tried to download HP's universal driver (64 bit) which is supposed to work and point the install to it but it says it is not a valid driver. I have tried connecting (software) the printer it has the same driver issues. I have tried changing the port address to \\Server\hp1200 (the name of my server and printer) and it says no such port. The firewalls on both computers are turned off during all of this. I have been to every website on the internet, all zillion of them and no success.I know that there are threads on this site to exactly the same problem but either I don't understand them correctly or they don't work for me.Thanks for the help.

Hi,if you connect your printer locally your system will recognize type. If you connect the printer via network, you must select printerdriver. At first, you must install new Printer:start-Devices and printers-add printer-add network printer-find it and on next screen you can choose producer of your printer (I make now this process and hp bussines injekt 1200 is on 4th place:)

That is the issue. When I select the network shared printer to install (HP 1200) it says it is "downloading the driver". Then it says "no driver found". When I point it to the universal 64 bit driver that I downloaded from HP it says that it "can't locate a sutable printer driver". At no time does it give me a list of manufacturers or printers.

You need to download and install the driver from the following website. HP LaserJet 1200 Printer series - Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. After installing the driver, please follow the steps below to create a local printer port and forward this port to the shared printer. 1. Click Start, click Control Panel and double click Devices and Printers.2. Click Add a Printer. 3. Select "Add a local printer". 4. Select "Create a new port". Choose "Local Port" as the type of the port. 5. In the box "Enter a port name", type the address as the following format. \\[IP address of the host computer]\[The Share Name of the printer] Then click Next. 6. Choose the correct driver in the driver list. If no available driver, click the button Windows Update, wait for the process finishes and then look for the driver again.7. Finish the installation. If the printers cannot be installed, or it does not work after installing, please let us know the model of the printer.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thanks so much for responding to my post.I have been through this procedure at least twenty times. I get the message "The network path was not found." When I go to run and type in "\\SERVER" it shows me everything shared on the server including the HP 1200 printer that I am trying to install. When I click on the printer it says Connecting to HP 1200 on Server" under that it says "Checking for update. This may take a while..." Then it comes back and says "Windows can't find a driver for HP Business Inkjet 1200 Series on the network. To locate one manually, click OK. Otherwise, click Cancel..." I then click OK and point it to the driver that I downloaded from the HP website ""hpcu094u.inf"". I click OK and it comes back with the message "Windows cannot locate a sutable driver..."I then try "run" "\\Server\HP 1200" I get the same runaround as above. The printer is a HP 1200 Business Inkjet. It works on the windows 7 64 bit laptop if connected locally by USB. Problem is that it can't be connected locally except for testing. The HP website says that it uses the universal driver as there are no specific drivers for it under win 7. They offer 3 universal drivers. I downloaded the "PL6" driver. The printer is connected to a XP sp 3 computer via USB2. I find it curious that it can find the printer by typing in "\\Server\hp 1200" from run but can't find it when I go through Create a new port route.I also find it curious that connecting it locally it uses the universal driver OK but connected to it on the network it doesn't. What's with that?Note: Firewalls on both machines are turned off. Thanks,Bill

Hi Bill, I would like to explain for my previous post. Please confirm if you have precisely followed the steps. 1. You need to download the printer driver from HP website and install it. 2. After installing the driver, please open the “Devices and Printers” control panel and install the network shared printer.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Arthur, I am having the same problem as Bill and he has explained the problem quite well. Can you help us or not?

The issue here is that there is not a specific driver listed for the particular printer anymore. The only available driver is the HP Universal Driver, which doesn't work with the standard procedure. I'm having the same issue. There is no selection for a specific printer and adding the HP Universal Printer eventually just times out. The solution above is fine for a specific driver for a specific printer. Unfortunately, HP is not providing them anymore for Win7 x64 -- only the universal print driver is available.

Well, just as I said it timed out, I got it to work. Follow the instructions above, but select the HP Universal Printer as your printer (I suggest renaming it to reflect the printer you want to use if, like me, you print in a variety of environments). It might take a long time, but if you've followed the other instructions, it will work.
