Print spooler compatibility Windows 7 client / Server 2003 domain server
It has come to my attention that there is a compatibility issue in Windows 7 when working with a Server 2003 domain server. When the client PC is connected to the domain, and uses the network printer(s) connected to the server, the print spooler service frequently stops working. The scenario: - 7 pc's connected to the domain. - 2 pc's not connected to the domain, however using the drive mappings and network printers connected to the same server. - All working on Windows 7 Pro and with identical hardware. The 6 domain clients are having frequent issues with their print spooler service, depending on how many documents are printed. The other 2 pc's, not in the domain, not having issues at all, using the same drivers for the same printers on the same server. I've been trying to solve this problem for quite a while now, but there doesn't seem to be any real solution for it, other than getting a script to restart the service easily, as a workaround. You would probably note that this could be a driver issue, however one of our customers has a similar setup, recently upgraded to Windows 7, using different printers (another brand as well) and other hardware than the scenario above and still having exactly the same issue so driver issues are most likely to be ruled out. I'm wondering if anyone else is having the same problems or if there is a solution for it. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Thanks for the post! As my understanding, the computers on the domain encounter this issue, however, others (not on a domain) are not. I suspect there might be some settings problem between your sever and network printer, not related to Windows 7. In order to resolve your problems efficiently, please ask question in Windows server forum http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverprint/threads , you may find some communities who meet the same issue as yours. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation! Hi, Thanks for your response. Even though the problem seems to be coming from the server / printer. This problem has never occured when the clients were working with Windows XP. Our customer has only recently upgraded to Windows 7 and since then, the problem started to occur. In our own environment we are having the same issue, and I've seen others encountering the same problem using Windows 7 in an environment with a 2003 SBS server. How can this not be related to Windows 7? King regards, Peter

Hi, We can provide you with some research, however, maybe it’s not the best choice, I recommend you also ask this question in Windows Server forum for more help. In order to avoid some mistakes resulted from the GP, please separately put a testing machine in a testing OU, do not apply any GP in this OU. At the same time, I suspect some driver compatibility or monitor program bring this problem, please follow the step here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistaprinting/thread/c9d368b7-922f-42ae-98e9-b743fa77fc3e to check if the issue persists.
