Previously running applications hang/freezes after system returns from idle.
I have a mixed environment of Window 7 Pro and 8.1. Pro for desktop users under a single domain.  I am transitioning old systems to new systems with Windows 8.1 Pro installed.  When my users had their old Windows 7 Pro systems, idle applications was easily re-established by just clicking on it.  In their, new Windows 8.1 environment, some of their idle applications hang/freezes (mostly those that are client-server based) if the system is left idle or into screen saver.  The only way to restart the program is by terminating the application via the Task Manager and relaunching it.  If they persistently work on their system, the application it will never hang.  I believe this may have something to do with some new features in Windows 8 and its WCM.  I cannot seem to figure this one out.  Has anyone seen this?

Hi,

Do you mean that this issue only happened in Windows 8.1, not in Windows 7? Is so, have you checked the compatibility of the applications with Windows 8.1 or contact the application vender to confirm this. Have you update the application to the latest version or just reinstall the application if possible in the new os.

And when the applicaton freezes, what happens in task manager? I mean anything abnormal of CPU, memory, disk or network of the application

Hi,

Thank you for responding.

The application work in Windows 7 without issue.  According the to the software vendor, the application is 64-bit compatible with Windows 8.1.  I have their latest software, but unfortunately, their support has never heard of this problem when I inquired.  In Fact, a remote session with them turned up nothing.

The task manager, is not showing any high; CPU, memory, disk or I/O activity, in fact a launching any other application response and work as expected. The application, though, does show, 'Not Responding'.

Maybe something happened in the installation we can't see, bad file or something.  I going to un-install, again.  This time weed the registry of traces of this app and re-install.  WML.

Well my plan did not work, though now it is happening less often.

The application is Structures from CF Data systems.   This is application is the core of our financials.

Also I need to mention that one-to-multiple instances of this application is started on a single system as to handle the financial for all our divisions.  This also worked fine under Windows 7 Pro.

Hi,

According to your description, I recommend you use the small tool Process Monitor to trace the detailed process of the applicatiion, you can download it from the following linik:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb896645.aspx

Filter the application exe to find detailed processes about the specific application

Hi and Thanks

This throws out a very big list of process.  Particularly what am I looking for?  Some anomaly?

Hi,

Have you tried to use the filter? This can help us filter other unnecessary processes.

look for something like access denied or one specific process persists a longtime, compare it with a normal system, I have to admit that this is not a easy job.
