Previous versions of files are there but never show up on the Previous Versions tab
I am running Windows 7 64 Home Premium on a home network. I have seen threads before about Window's file versioning not working but have yet to find any solution. The thing is that file versions are being created. I can see them using ShadowExplorer. But, on every file, if I try to see them using the Previous Versions tab of the properties, no versions show up. So, my issue is different in that file versions are there, but Windows can't seem to see them without using a third party application. Any suggestions would be appreciated

I have found answer on ShadowExplorer home page: From time to time, Windows Vista/7 creates point-in-time copies of your files. This allows you to retrieve older versions from files you accidentally deleted or altered. This service is turned on by default on all versions of Windows Vista/7, but Microsoft grants access to these copies only in Ultimate, Business, and Enterprise editions. This is where ShadowExplorer comes into play. Comparing versions in bold with your version I came to conclusion, that unless you upgrade, you would not see "what you want". If you had sticked with W 7 Home Premium, then you have chosen optimal solution based on ShadowExplorer. Regards Milos

Thanks, Milos. That makes sense but what is kind of odd is that it did work at one point (that is why it caught my attention when it stopped working). Maybe an update changed the behavior. In any case, it appears to be disabled now. I appreciate your help

Hi, You can check whether this issue is related to administrative shares missing. Please refer to the following: 1. Click the "Start" Button, type "Computer Management" (without quotation marks) in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 2. Expand System Tools\Shared Folders\ and select Shares. You should see something like this, where all of your logical drives are present in the center-panel list with the "$" behind them: If you already see that "shares" exist for all of your logical drives: You can try going to the Network & Sharing control panel, selecting "Change advanced sharing settings," and verifying that "File and printer sharing" is on. After making any necessary changes, restart Windows, and retry Restore Previous Versions from any logical drive that has System Protection enabled. If not, please try the step 3. 3. Examine the AutoShareServer and AutoShareWks registry values to make sure that they are not set to 0: (Note: Please refer to this knowledge base (KB) article to back up the registry key before trying the steps) a. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER. b. Locate and then click the following registry sub-key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters c. If the AutoShareServer and AutoShareWks DWORD values in the LanmanServer\Parameters sub-key are configured with a value data of 0, change that value to 1. Note If these values do not exist, you do not have to create them because the default behavior is to automatically create the administrative shares. d. Quit Registry Editor. Then check the result. Hope it helps.Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Hi, Administrative shares are there and File & Printer sharing is on. Still, no luck. I was thinking about just deleting the System Volume Information folder and starting my restore points fresh. Is that a good or bad idea? Thanks again

Hi, Please ensure all of your logical drives are showed in the shares, like: ADMIN$ C$ D$ If these files already showed. Please try the following: 1. Make sure that you have turned on System Protection. 2. Try to use the command to check if the Volume Shadow Copies are created. vssadmin list shadows 3. Check the following registry. (Note: Please refer to this knowledge base (KB) article to back up the registry key before trying the steps) HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Parameters If there is an entry named: DisableDownLevelTimewarp, please try to delete it. Hope this helps. Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support

Hi Vincent The shares are there, Volume Shadow Copies are being created (I have 7) and the DisableDownLevelTimewarp key does not exist in my registry. I am seeing two VSS errors in the event log. 1) Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied. . This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process. 2) Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine IMultiInterfaceEventControl::GetSubscriptions. hr = 0x80010108, The object invoked has disconnected from its clients. Thanks again

As a follow-up, I shared a folder on this machine, went to another machine, mapped a folder and I could see the previous versions. So, the problem is not in the creation of the versions but in the the "previous versions" tab seeing them
