Previous Versions in Windows 7
When you delete a current file e.g. a Word docx file are the previous versions automatically deleted? How can you restore a previous version of a deleted file?
Please can you provide a link to an informative Article to explain how to use the Previous Version facility

Hi,
Try here:

or you can click Start=>Help and support=>search term previous version for 30 + topics of various relevance.
Did that help you?

It can be retrieved if you know the location of the .docx file, read this

And when the Document is not stored in the Documents folder or a sub-folder of the Documents folder?
Right-click somewhere in the folder (without selecting a file or folder), and then click
Restore previous versions -how do you click in a folder other than on an existing file? That statement has me puzzled!
How can you confirm that there was a file if your recollection of it's previous existence is hazy? How long is the previous version retained? How is the previous version deleted?
I have unmarked the proposed Answer because I was looking for comments beyond what is said in the Microsoft document, which I had previously read.
TIA, Gerry

Hi Gerry,
1. A previous versions are created by Windows Backup or copies files and folders that Windows automatically saves as part of a restore point. It doesn't matter whether it's stored in Documents or not.
The link
describes very clear how the previous versions work.
2. "Right-click somewhere in the folder (without selecting a file or folder), and then click Restore previous versions -how do you click in a folder other than on an existing file? That statement has me puzzled! "
For example, I saved a docx file in D:\TEST folder, If I want to use the Previous Versions, I open this folder, then right-click in a blank place (inside this window), choose Properties, then open Previous Versions tab.
If you right-click on this file, you can restore the previous versions of this
file. If you right-click somewhere inside this windows, you restore the previous of this
folder, not only the file.
3. "How can you confirm that there was a file if your recollection of it's previous existence is hazy? How long is the previous version retained? How is the previous version deleted?"
Check if there's a previous version, right-click the file or folder, choose Propperties - Previous Versions. It will show up if you have the restore points.
The time of the previous version depends on your settings.

Miya
