Previous Versions from Windows Backup
Hi, I created a backup job and selected to create a system image and to backup all my libraries. After the backup process finished I deleted a file from my libraries and opened "previous versions" of that folder. There was no "previous version" listed. I then checked manually that the file is in the backup. It is. Does anybody know why backups are not listed in previous versions? I tried that on a second computer and got the same problem. Thanks! BTW: Restore points are listed correctly.

Previous versions are part of shadow copy and while backup uses shadow copy it is a separate, but linked system. I believe to restore a previous version from backup it needs to be part of the automatic scheduled back up, not just a system image. Additionally the backup media has to be available when you try to access previous versions. Example In the backup GUI you make a system image you will not be able to access any files in the image using previous versions. However if you select the user files in addition to the system image all of those files (minus system files I believe) should be available through previous versions. There may not have been even space allocated to keep shadow copies (previous versions) or the feature was disabled, or a shadow copy had not been created. You can access the shadow copy space settings under system protection. 'Disk space usage' is the amount of space allowed for system restore points and previous versions of files.

Thanks for answering! It seems previous versions from backup are not exactly working like restore points. With restore points it's possible to restore deleted files and folders. To use a backup in that case is not offered to me. It's different with changed files. Then I got the option to use backups. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

When I remove a file from a folder and try to restore it via Folder Properties->"Previous Versions", a recently created backup is not listed. Only restore points are offered to me. Otherwise, when I create an empty file in that folder and name it the same as the just deleted file from step 1, then the File Properties->"Previous Versions"-tab gives me the option to restore it from a backup set. I don't know if that is the way it is supposed to work. I assumed that there should be a backup listed in step 1.

Ok I get your point. I don't know for certain right now, but I will test it when I get time ( it won't be today). I believe in that case what should happen is the previous versions from the back up if the automatic scheduled backup was used. If any other backup method was used previous versions would not be availible.

Ok I finally tested it and here is what I found. When related to folders. Previous versions links do NOT show backup copies from system images. When you run backup and make a system image it does NOT create previous version links. However it DOES create a restore point before creating the backup which includes previous versions. When you run backup anf do NOT include a system image it does NOT create previous version links. However it DOES create a restore point before creating the backup which includes previous versions. When you schedule a backup, but do not let windows choose it does NOT create previous version links. However it DOES create a restore point before creating the backup which includes previous versions. When you schedule a backup, and let windows choose it does NOT create previous versions links. However it DOES create a restore point before creating the backup which includes previous versions. So to summarize Backup does not create previous version links to backups in folder properties, but it does create restore points at the beginning of each backup and previous versions are included in the restore points. When related to files it does create previous version links to backups. Winddows 7pro 64 ent sp1.
