Previous Versions - Shadow Copy Clientn -7
Has anyone tried to restore a file on a 2003 server from Windows 7? I thought my shadow copies were corrupt. From 7 when I try to view or restore a previous version of a file, it is unavailable, the same folder, file is fine from XP.

Hi, I suggest that you check related settings. 1. Click Start, right-click on Computer, choose Properties. 2. Choose Advanced system settings. 3. Click the tab System protection. 4. Click the Configure button. 5. Enable restore and assign enough space. If the issue persists, please let us know if you have dual-boot system with Windows XP. If so, the backup can be deleted if you boot in the other system. Additionally, if the folder is never changed, we could not restore it to any previous version.Arthur Xie - MSFT

System restore isn't the issue. When I look at previous version from a non-Windows 7 computer it is fine, it's just looking at them from the Windows 7 computer that has the issue. Guess I should include that this is a share on a server.I'm looking at a windows share on a 2003 server.I right click and select"Previous Versions", the list ofprevious versions comes up but I am unable to open or restore from any of them. If I do this from another computer on the network I have no problem. ---It could be that the shadow copy client for server 2003 isn't compatible with windows 7.

Yes, Shadow Copy Client is designed for systems earlier than Windows Server 2003. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 beta it does not work. The following website has introduced its function. Shadow Copy Client DownloadArthur Xie - MSFT

As part of testing and thinking of implementing Windows 7, what do I need for Shadow Copies 2003? When 7 is released is the plan for it to work with 2003 Shadow Copy Client? And.. 2003 Shadow Copy Client does work with Vista, I belive there was an update for vista, but not completely sure! I have a number of Vista machines on my 2003 network and all can access Shadow copy files, just as the xp machines do.I'm notneeding to access these from my windows 7 test machine today but I do need to know what the plans are for 7 and 2003 shadow copy.

Hi, Are there any error messages? If so, please let me know the detail (When the messages pop up, press Ctrl+C to copy and then paste to Notepad). I suggest that you temporary disable the anti-virus and firewall on the server computer. If the issue persists, check if you have write permission for the shared folder from the Windows 7 folder. Also please be assure that the VSS service in the Windows 7 beta computer is enabled. Also please let us know if the Previous Versions function works when you try to restore a local folder on the Windows 7 beta computer. Arthur Xie - MSFT

I can access/restore previous versions on the Windows 7 machine. When I open previous versions, located on the 2003 Server, from the Windows 7 machine I can see them but the folder icons not there, there is a white generic icon. Why would the a/v or firewall on the server only block Windows 7? I have tried turning the firewall off on the windows 7 machine and nothing changes. Also,I shut down the firewall and a/v on the server, this didn't change anything.

Hi, Do you have other computers on which the Previous Version function works well with the Windows Server 2003 computer? The anti-virus may block the access to the restore folder. I suggest that you also disable the anti-virus temporary on the Windows 7 beta computer. If the issue persists, I suggest that you check related policies in Windows 7 beta. 1. Enter gpedit.msc in Start Search box. 2. Locate to Computer Administrative Template\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\Previous Versions (Under both Computer Configuration and User Configuration). 3. Find the following policies in the right pane. Prevent Restoring Remote Previous Versions Hide Previous Versions list for Remote Files Disable the both policies. Arthur Xie - MSFT

We talked about AV software, I disabled it on the server to check. All computers on the network can access shadow copies from the server except the Windows 7 beta computersWindows 7 Beta computers can access shadow copies (previous versions) locally but can not access them on the 2003 server.I went through the steps in the group policy just to check and this made no difference.ICAN see the list of shadow copies, I am unable to open or restore anything. Are you sure there isn't a known issue with Shadow copies for 2003 and Windows 7?

Hi, Does Shadow Copy work when you restore folder on the Windows 7 beta computer from the Windows Server 2003 computer? If so, there should be not bugs. Do you get any error message when the restore failed? Also please let us know if you create same username/password on both computers. I suggest that you change the authentication level to Send LM & NTLM responses on the Windows 7 beta computer. Please refer the following article. Thanks for the info - we just had this issue going from a Win7 machine over to files on a Server '03 box. Have any of you noticed a similar issue with Server 2008 R2? We're able to access Shadow Copies on the server itself, but if we go from that box to those on a Server '03 box we're unable.
