Preventing Windows 10 from installing from Windows 7

HELP!!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT cancel the WIndows 10 update. I would like to install the other updates but it immediately starts "Downloading Windows 10"!!!

I've deleted all the KB (KB2990214  KB3035583 and one more that I forget) installed items above, none are left (3 deleted)!

I've hidden the Windows 10 Update in the "Optional Updates" window when it was possible to hide.  Now it just doesn't show up!

I do NOT want any part of Windows 10 and cannot stop it.  ANYONE?????

Thanks so much!!!

Hi Rick,

Microsoft released an update (KB3035583) for Windows 7 (Optional) and 8.1 (Recommended) that is called the Get Windows 10 app.

If you did not install this update before, you can hide this update;

If you had installed it, you can uninstall it through Windows Update also.

Best regards,

Thank you Niko for the response.  Unfortunately, I uninstalled ALL the "updates" per other links and I still get "Windows 10 downloading" when I try to do an update.  There is NOTHING to hide any longer, all GWX files that I can find are deleted.  I have no clue how to prevent this!

Thanks again for the response!

The computer may need to be restarted after hiding the updates to complete the process.

You could also go into Windows Update, select Change Settings then select Check for updates but let me choose whether to install them under Important updates.

If you have not tried this, take a look at How to STOP the automatic update to Windows 10 ? and this - How to stop Windows 10 Upgrade Monster?

Bruce, thanks for the response. I've tried EVERYTHING, from uninstalling updates to changing register keys to hiding installations to changing my Windows update settings... It STILLLLLLLLLLLLL wants to download and install Windows 10! What a nightmare!

GEEEESSSSHHHHHHHHH!!!

Hello Rick8026,

If you had previously selected to reserve a copy of Windows 10 to stop it from popping up, the upgrade will keep trying to install regardless of what you try. You should allow it to upgrade to Windows 10 then roll it back after the upgrade is complete. I would also suggest to Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool.

You can then recover your windows 8.1 from Recovery options in Windows 10. It may be a round about way of resolving your issue but it should take care of this problem.

Thank you Bruce, it seems that this would be the only way. Unfortunately, I've also read of many issues when rolling it back (to Windows 7 BTW). And the other factor is time! Do you know how long it would take to do all of what you say?

Gratefully!

There are many variables that can effect this process so an actual length of time is hard to say. I have not performed the roll back myself but I've read that for some people it was fairly quick, less than an hour. Your actual time may vary (to coin a phrase).

Or you could give Windows 10 a try for about 30 days and if you still do not like it, roll it back to Windows 8.1. I have run both and have decided to keep Windows 10 as a personal preference. The features that Windows 10 offers supersedes what Windows 8.1 has. The concerns that people have regarding Windows 10 can be mostly resolved by searching the Internet to modify it. So since you are there now, give it a try, you may like it better.

Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.

What do you think the odds are that all software will run properly?  :)  I hear not good?

Also, since you're being so kind, the things I hear about Windows 10 uploading a ton of personal information scares me.  Isn't this true?

I have been running windows 10 since it came out and so far it has been pretty much bullet proof. I have been watching the response on the internet to the fact that so much personal information is being uploaded, but the reality is that it is probably not being used for anything nefarious (probably), and I believe Microsoft are just being a little more forceful in getting the information they need to be able to make voice and text recognition more accurate, as well as to tailor their services better. If you want to turn it off, articles like this are EVERYWHERE at the moment...
