Me I would dump Norton and use Microsoft Security Essentials. Link for that is on my IT site too. Now enter the Control Panel\System and Security\Power Options Create a new plan and set it up as you need. I use a custom one for my notebook called Docked and Undocked to change how it works when its plugged in Windows MVP, XP, Vista, 7. When the problem started, Norton Utilities wasn't installed, I installed it today, exactly to can correct the registry errors. I tried with many power schemes, eg with those provided with windows, but it doesn't work with any, so I think a new scheme will not resolve this (but I will try)!BalazsLaci

Hi, Since many kinds of problem may cause this problem, please use Powercfg command to check this issue. To do that, refer to the steps below: 1. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), right click on the "Cmd.exe" in the search result list and select "Run as administrator". 2. Type " powercfg -energy " (without quotation marks) in the open window and press Enter Key. Upload the file(C:\Windows\system32\energy-report.html) via SkyDrive and post a link here. Then we could analyze the problem deeply. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive Hope that helps Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. What exactly do you mean by "my power settings had stopped working"? What error message do you see on the screen? I don't see anything in the powercfg report that might help to identify the cause of your issue. There isn't any error message, but the computer don't standby after the presetted time. The monitor turn off, the hard disks turns off (sometimes I can hear it), but the computer don't enter in standby. In rest everything is OK!BalazsLaci

That machine is rather old and I think that is why Windows 7 does not work on it too well. Likely a better route is a new rig with a modern motherboard cpu and ram Windows MVP, XP, Vista, 7. Yes, it is old, but befor I installed the Win 7, the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor told me that everything is OK and the Win 7 will run without problems. Maybe really changing the machine is the only solution?BalazsLaci

Most portables use unorthodox hardware ids etc. This is why they do not work all that well when upgraded. If you have the option to use a PnP OS select yes. Windows MVP, XP, Vista, 7. BalazsLaci Hi, Usually, you could find a BIOS upgrade package on manufacturer's(laptop or motherborad) website. Also they would provide the installation instructions. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
