Power Options not working
I just installed Windows 7 Profession and everything is working great except that I can't get any of my power options to work, the screen saver will not turn on (if I preview the screen saver it works, however) and the monitor will not turn off nor will the computer go into sleep mode, no matter how many times i change the settings. I've googled around for a while and found a few suggestions about turning off some hardware's ability to wake the computer from sleep mode. I made sure I disabled any device from waking the computer from sleep mode, but no luck. Any other suggestions?

Hi Captain Murdock,First thing I woulddo is see if all my hardware drivers are up to date. The Windows drivers are the best match for most hardware but you may havebetter resultswith drivers obtained directly from manufacturers.

My drivers are definitely up to date, I downloaded and installed the latest graphics driver update for my ATI Raedon Xpress 1150. I'm at a loss for what to do at this point.

You mentioned configuring hardware not to wake the computer. Did you do this for your network adapter as well?

Yeah that was the first thing I checked.

Open an elevated command prompt (right click on the shortcut to the command prompt...run as administrator) and run powercfg /energy.It'll run for 60 seconds and then create a file in that same directory.Open the file and see if you can paste the output here please. It might offer some clues as to what's going on here. Thanks,MarkWant to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7? Another thing you can try is a BIOS revision if there is one availible.

Hi Captain, Before going any further, we need make sure that Sleep mode is enabled in Power Option. This issue can occur due to MS application and third party software conflicts, such as WMP sharing settings. We can try the steps below. After finishing each step, please check the result again. Step 1: Test the issue in Clean Boot====================================1. Click the Start Button, type MSCONFIG in the Search Bar and Press Enter to start the System Configuration Utility. Note: Please click the Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up. 2. Click the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray). 3. Click the Startup tab, click Disable All and click OK. 4. Restart the computer and test the issue. Note: Clean Boot is just a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can enable them later on. If you see the System Configuration Utility, check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click OK. To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click "Normal Startup" on the General tab, click "OK", and then restart the computer.Step 2: Check the related Windows Media Player settings ===========================================1. Start Windows Media Player2. Click the arrow below the Now Playing tab, and then click More Options. 3. On the Player tab, check the "Allow screen saver during playback" box.4. Restart the WMP and test the issue. Step 3: Allow the computer to sleep===================================1. Click Start, type "powercfg.cpl" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box, press Enter. 2. Click "change plan settings", then click "change advanced power settings". 3. Browser down and under "Multimedia Settings --> When Sharing Media", please choose "Allow the computer to sleep". 4. Click OK. Does the issue persist?Hope the above inforamtion is useful. :)

I wen through all of the above steps, still no luck. No screensaver, no sleep mode, nothing. I tried a few more tests, I changed "Balanced" mode's settings to 1min for dim screen and turn off screen and 2 min for sleep mode (for both battery and plugged in). I then tried unplugging all peripheral devices (mouse, printer, etc.) with no success. I also tried unplugging the power cord with no peripherals with no success. Could this potentially have something to do with my video driver? I have a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop with an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 chipset. Currently they don't have a Windows 7 driver so I had to install the Vista driver. Both Dell and ATI's websites don't have anything newer than a Vista driver. If it is the driver, it seems odd that everything about the video driver would work (visuals run smoothly, wide screen resolution works, no problems at all with graphics) but simply turning on the screen-saver or shutting off the monitor wouldn't work...

As a test, try longer settings, like 15+ minutes. Also, make sure you have all of your apps closed when you're trying these tests. Having a browser window open with a flash ad in it can prevent your machine from suspending.Try turning off your wifi too (with the switch on the laptop).Could be a problem w/ your video driver, or a different driver on the machine. Nothing else stands out to me from the putput you posted above.Want to know if your hardware will work on Windows 7? I'm having the same problem on my HP zd8000 with ATI Mobility Radeon X600 graphics card.I wonder if ATI/Radeon graphics drivers are the problem. My power options/screensaver are not working at all.I also use Live Mesh. When, from another computer, I try to remotely access the zd8000, it just shuts off completely.Captain Murdock, are you running Live Mesh as well ?

We need contact ATI regarding this issue.

Nope, I'm not running live mesh. I have a hunch that it is the ATI driver. After researching this more I've read some other people with similar cards having the same problem. Hopefully ATI will release Windows 7 versions of the drivers.

I'm having the same problem with all of my drivers current and nVidia has current Windows 7 64-bit drivers available. I ran the powercfg /energy and came up with several errors that were all the same: "USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend" for what appears to be all my USB devices.I went to Device Manager and checked almost everything in the list to see which ones had the Power Management tab and unchecked (if it was checked) the selection "Allow this device to wake the computer".I'm using the release version of Windows 7 but this same thing happened with the RC1 version.I haven't tried yet but could any of the widgets with moveable "parts" cause this? I hope somebody can figure this out because it's gotten annoying trying to remember to turn the monitors off, especially since I have too many dead brain-cells that aren't able to help me remember:-)

But it's called out in the report because it does have an impact on battery life. The "allow this device to wake the computer" option is unrelated to this USB suspend.I believe it is possible that widgets could cause it. This is how I fixed my problem, just in case anyone cares or stumbles upon this website with the same problems as me. Apparently this is a problem with the hardware on my Dell Vostro 1000. This may apply to other Dell laptops as well, I'm not sure. The problem essentially is that your system is receiving a signal that a key is being pressed even though its not. The fix is simple. Switch off the laptop. Unplug the power cord. Remove battery Press Power On switch several times and/or hold down for a few seconds. refit battery Plug power back in Switch on This completely fixed the problem for me. The system goes into screensaver and sleep mode properly when idle. On a related note, although this was not the solution to my exact problem, Dell's Vista display drivers for the ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 chipset have several issues on Windows 7. The latest drivers for Vista do not work properly, however older versions do. Version 8.12 works well for me. As ATI has not and will not release drivers for Windows 7 for this chipset, this is the best option. Similar thing on my desktop. Forgive me not starting a new thread. I have had trouble with powersave not stayingoff, when screensaver has welcome screen checkmark. Right after powersave 'kicks on' it 'kicks back off again. In other words, my monitor power does not stay off. Lately I've had some luck using Windows 7 Utimate 32 troubleshooter Adjust Power Options on System and Security (last troubleshooter in Control Panel.) It founda problem (I forget and worked for a while). Today it didn't work, so I ran it again and the problem found wasscreensaver active and it 'corrected' that and power stayed off to the screen, but Windows had Troubleshooted(or is it Troubleshot?) the problem by turning off the screensaver. I also have a powercfg report and will try to attach. Thanks for reading this and let me know if you think I need to start a new thread. paj692 <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> - <EnergyReport xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/energy/2007"> - <ReportInformation> <ReportGuid>ecccc39f-f5db-48fa-94dc-df804599ba1e</ReportGuid> <ReportVersion>1.0</ReportVersion> <ScanTime>2010-02-03T00:46:05Z</ScanTime> <ScanDuration>PT30S</ScanDuration> </ReportInformation> - <Troubleshooter guid="c78b52e3-9cd7-4802-979c-57ca1283dafa"> <Name>System Information</Name> - <AnalysisLog> - <LogEntry guid="3d053cee-9926-4ac0-a4e1-63ab80c63af0"> <Name>System Information</Name> <Severity>Informational</Severity> <Description>System Information Details</Description> - <Details> - <Detail guid="300b5d9f-434e-45b0-80d2-4bd55b168ef3"> <Name>Computer Name</Name> <Value>FERDINAND-PC</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="a49d84bf-a8c7-4c26-8f54-eefccac2f084"> <Name>System Manufacturer</Name> <Value>Compaq Presario 061</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="ceddb6e2-626c-4efe-ae58-c7b241693909"> <Name>System Product Name</Name> <Value>RK519AA-ABA SR2044NX NA680</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="b586008a-e3ca-457a-8f48-30fe0de3facf"> <Name>BIOS Date</Name> <Value>01/18/2007</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="c85bfef6-93e7-4f1a-a35d-20655dab095d"> <Name>BIOS Version</Name> <Value>3.24</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="31dc51fd-a872-4546-a54f-ae0da74cdf9f"> <Name>OS Build Number</Name> <Value>7600</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="8838163d-e78c-4858-9432-9b034382e9f6"> <Name>Platform Role</Name> <Value>PlatformRoleDesktop</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="d64ab9ff-6978-4c37-ac17-9494347b673b"> <Name>Process Count</Name> <Value>78</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="375cbf0f-61d5-42b8-a0fd-16c198b7b32f"> <Name>Thread Count</Name> <Value>894</Value> </Detail> - <Detail guid="9fd5343d-fcb1-42ac-9566-8a8e8409a60b"> <Name>Plugged In</Name> <Value>true</Value> </Detail> </Details> </LogEntry> </AnalysisLog> </Troubleshooter> - <Troubleshooter guid="b80a1fd9-c81e-479f-8f72-c6a1e9e54dec"> <Name>Platform Timer Resolution</Name> - <AnalysisLog> - <LogEntry guid="843c944e-9fc2-4e58-9e58-9bfdf0ea25b2"> <Name>Platform Timer Resolution</Name> <Severity>Informational</Severity> <Description>The default platform timer resolution is 15.6ms (15625000ns) and should be used whenever the system is idle.
