Potential bug? Dynamic Disks and sleep in Windows 7.
Hi. I have recently encountered a strange problem when returning Windows from sleep. I have a 3TB disk array set as a Striped Dynamic Disk - I was previously using firmware RAID0 for this, but that caused major problems. However, I have now noticed that when returning from sleep, approximately 50% of the time, the dynamic disk disappears completely - It's not visible in disk nor device management, and likewise, it's drive letter becomes available for reuse and the disk disappears from Computer. The disk returns after a full reboot, however I'm not sure if this is a bug (or an oddity in my hardware configuration), or if it's something that can be worked around. Any information on a workaround would be appreciated, and if this is a bug, information on where/how to report it would be obliged. Thanks.

What are the models of the RAID0 firmware and motherboard? I suspect that this is a compatibility issue. You may try to find if there is any Windows 7 compatible driver for the RAID0 controller. My Raid0 controller works perfectly, it simply degrades performance of my SSD when used at the same time, which is why I have resorted to using Dynamic Disks instead. This means my raid controller is disabled and is therefore not of concern for my disappearing dynamic disk due to sleep.

Have you tried to resolve the issue by installing the latest SSD firmware update for Windows 7? What is the model? Have you tried to resolve the issue by installing the latest SSD firmware update for Windows 7? What is the model? Unfortunately, this is not relevant to the issue I am experiencing. The performance slowdown of SSD when my system is set to RAID mode with more than 3TB in an array is a chipset limitation and has nothing to do with Windows 7. It is because of this limitation that I started using dynamic disks, and that is where my question arose. I apologise if I did not make it clear, but my query has to do with dynamic disks disappearing after sleep, I am not looking for advice to fix the original problem that made me look to dynamic Disks.

So, currently the stripped volume is created and controlled by Windows 7 via Disk Management. Is my understating correct? You should let us know the detail information of your motherboard and hard disks so we are able to find whether the hardware is the root cause. We have not received similar feedbacks. You should let us know the detail information of your motherboard and hard disks so we are able to find whether the hardware is the root cause. We have not received similar feedbacks. That is correct, I have set up my two 2TB drives through Disk Management as a Striped volume. My system specifications are: CPU: Intel Core i7-920 RAM: 12GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1600 GPU: Radeon HD 5870 SSD: G.Skill Falcon 128GB HDD: 2x Samsung EcoGreen 2TB (HD203WI) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Revision 1.6 None of my hardware is overclocked. All of the drives (My DVDRW, my SSD, and my two hard drives) are connected to the sata ports from the northbridge; the G-Sata and jmicron sata ports on my board are disabled. My bios is set to AHCI for these ports. Please let me know if you need any further information. Thanks.

Hi, I suggest you download the firmware update for the SSD. Please refer the following post in G.Skill forum. [ONLY for Falcon SSD]Firmware 1916 Updated (w/ Clean Function) For how to install the firmware update please refer: [ONLY for Falcon SSD]Firmware 1916 Released Important Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information. Also I suggest you download the SATA controller drivers from: GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 1.0) – GIGABYTE - Drivers Since the issue is also related to power management, please download and install the latest BIOS update from: GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 1.0) – GIGABYTE - BIOS We never experienced such cases. It should not be a bug of Windows 7. I suspect that this is related to the firmware compatibility issue. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Thank you for your reply. My SSD is already at firmware version 1916, but since this problem ocurrs whether my SSD is connected or not and has nothing to do with it, I doubted that this would be a contributing factor. I am using newer Intel chipset drivers directly from Intel, but as per your instructions I downgraded to the drivers on the official gigabyte site. No effect, the devices still disappear after going to sleep. As for the bios, the page you linked me to was for the Rev 2.0 board, which has a bios that is not fully compatible with mine. I have the latest bios (F6) installed for my revision 1.0 board. I have already attempted these "normal" fixes to this problem, updating drivers and firmware. I would not be asking here if I did not think it was something I could fix myself.

Hi, Have you installed the GIGABYTE SATA2 Driver? How does it work if you temporary disable the antivirus? How does it work in Clean Boot Mode? Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi. I had the Gigabyte sata controller disabled when I installed Windows last, and it has never been enabled since, so I very much doubt the drivers have been loaded. However, whether or not it uses a standard windows driver I don't know, but I certainly never installed any third party drivers for this. I tried a few moments ago to disable my antivirus before putting the computer to sleep to see if this helped, but the dynamic drive still disappeared after being woken up around 30 minutes later. My antivirus is MSE, in case it is relevant. Since the drive is fine on standard bootup (cold/warm boot, either with or without my startup programs running), I can't properly test this. However, I closed all programs, stopped all third party services and then put the computer to sleep to see if the same issue ocurred. This also involved turning off my antivirus, so I did this part after the last. Unfortunately, the same problem occurred. I'd like to thank you for your continued assistance with this matter.

Based on all of the information you provided, we can confirm that this issue is related to hardware compatibility. To work around this issue, I suggest you use the diskpart command lines to reactivate the dynamic disk when the disk is not shown. You may refer the following article. Hello, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with Win2008R2. I have two dynamic disks whose partitions are mirrored and one of the disks very frequently gets lost when restarting the PC after a sleep ("invalid dynamic disk"). My config: - motherboard Shuttle K45 (ICH7 chipset) - 1 WD caviar green 1go WD10EADS / 1 Samsung F3 1go HD103SJ All software and hardware are up to date (bios, driver, etc.). The disks have been tested with their manufacturer's testing software and are ok. Thanks for your help Chris
