Possible hacking even if computer is turned off.
Is it possible for someone to hack into a computer even if it turned off but ethernet is still connected? Coworker said she turned her computer off last Friday and on Monday her profile was completely deleted and possibly some personal documents taken. This is a work environment and supposely behind a firewall. Are there additional information required for this question to be answered? Fairly new to networking and no experience in programming or forsenic IT. Thank you,

Thank you, It's quite common for networked PC's to be set up so that they can be switched on and controlled remotely by an authorised admin. Note that the admin still needs to have a logon and password for the machine - if that's not available then very little is going to happen unless the machine is wide open. What's more likely is that something got corrupted - you should contact the system admin and ask them to check out the system. -- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

I've also seen a pc lose the proper profile after boot. Boot it again and it gets into the right profile. If the pc was turned on over the weekend it would be in the audit logs. Computers record when they wake up and get turned off.
