Possible Bug: Rename Almost Everything On Desktop?
I don't know if I'm hitting the Windows key on accident and hitting a certain letter or what but here's what's happening... Note: This happened with the public beta and Enterprise (RTM) trial. I created a text document and typed in the file name. NOTHING on the desktop was selected. When I pressed enter everything on the desktop (files, folders and shortcuts) was renamed to the name of the text file. In the first case (Beta) I was going to put a URL for something on Bing in a text file. I typed in "Bing" (the .txt was already there) and hit enter, suddely everything on the left side of the desktop was named Bing! The exception was 3 shortcuts on the upper right (aligned vertically, seperate from everything else) on the desktop. The second time it happened (Enterprise RTM) it was really slow for some reason and I was able to hit cancel after it renamed only 3 items. I was thinking maybe I accidentally hit ctrl or the windows key + one of the letters to do this but with nothing else selected I don't see how this can be (I'm positive I didn't hit ctrl+a though). Is this a bug or does anybody know of a key combination that'll do this? Thanks P.S. I didn't realize there was a "undo rename" selection in the context menu the first time or it wouldn't have been such a big deal lol

That is a strange one. How often does this happen? When it does happen, do the shortcuts, files, etc. still open the proper programs, documents, etc.?

It's only happened twice so far. The first time was at the beginning of August and the second time was about a week ago.

Hi AnthonyAntony, I cannot repro this issue and I also cannot find related entry in our database. Given the current situation, could you please let me know what software installed on your computer? I will try to repro this issue. Thank you for your cooperation.

The only programs that were common to both installs were as follows: Logitech Setpoint (mouse only) Firefox 3.5 Java SE 6 (U16, might have been U15 the first time, not sure) ATi Catalyst Control Center ESET NOD32 AV MS Office 2007 Pro Realtek HD Audio Manager (may have been running but I usually disable this so probably not) AnyDVD HD Trial may have been running but I'm not sure. Please note, no programs were open when this happened both times (notepad wasn't even open, I simply created a new text file and renamed it right away). Everything had the latest patches/updates both times.

I just saw this behavior and came to this site when searching for it. Summary:A very recent install, still getting my system setup, as soon as the error happened I stopped to report, so I'll give all the info I can...- I sent myself a zipped file in an email and drag/dropped from Outlook to my desktop- File was named "mme" with no extention.- Clicked the file, hit F2 and typed"mme.zip" to rename it-Thefilenamebecame "mme (1)" but the icon had not changed to a zipped folder- The only other items on my desktop were the Computer link and two text files, "NJ.txt" and "Utah.txt"- After renaming, the two text files became "mme (2)" and "mme (3)"- I opened a command prompt and browsed that directory- I saw that I now had "mme (1)", no extention, "mme (2).txt" and "mme (3).txt"- I renamed "mme (1)" to "mme.zip" and then the two txt files back to NJ and Utah-I cannot reproduce this by going through the same steps againRunning applications:OutlookRunning processes (excluding SYSTEM processes):crss.exedwm.exeexplorer.exeGrooveMonitor.exeipoint.exejusched.exeOUTLOOK.exetaskhost.exewinlogon.exeInstalled Programs:Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveXAdobe Flash Player 10 PluginMicrosoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP2Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5Microsoft Device Emulator version 3.0 - ENUMicrosoft Document Explorer 2008Microsoft IntelliPoint 7.0Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007Microsoft Office Live Add-in 1.4Microsoft SilverlightMicrosoft SQL Server 2005Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Design Tools ENUMicrosoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 ENUMicrosoft SQL Server compact 3.5 for Devices ENUMicrosoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.2Microsoft SQL Server Native ClientMicrosoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English)Microsoft SQL Server VSS WriterMicrosoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition - ENUMicrosoft Visual Studio Web Authoring ComponentMicrosoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 .NET Framework ToolsMicrosoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 Headers and LibrariesMicrosoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 SDK Reference Assemblies and IntelliSenseMicrosoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 ToolsMicrosoft Windows SDK for Visual Studio 2008 Win32 ToolsMSDN Library for Visual Studio 2008 - ENURealtek High Definition Audio DriverVisual Studio 2005 Tools for Office Second Edition RuntimeVisual Studio Tools for the Office system 3.0 RuntimeWindows Live EssentialsWindows Live ID Sing-in AssistantWindows Live Upload ToolWindows Mobile 5.0 SDK R2 for Pocket PCWindows Mobile 5.0 SDK R2 for SmartphoneHope that helps.-Kurt Scherer
