Possibitlity of Wireless/Network Status Window at Logon Screen (Win 7)
Hey, all. The following is a copy/paste from the following link as it was suggested it might be better served over here: http://tinyurl.com/6xkf92b. BrettW02: I work for a school district with a large number of laptops. Some of our laptops have connection issues in certain areas of our schools. As well, our student laptops are deepfreezed which prevents windows 7 from caching the previous logged on student/user. In any case, I was wondering if there were any scripts, third-party tools, or any other methods to display a wiresless/network status at the logon screen for windows 7 computers? This would help students to wait until they could see that their laptop has a connection before attempting to logon. C64User: Hey, all. I notice that this question was last addressed in December of last year, but I was hoping that a fix had presented as I'm experiencing the exact same issue as the OP. The bollocks is that I can untick needing a password to allow access to the generic laptop account (my machines are Deep Freeze, too), but, then, I'm unable to use RDC because there's no password and this is dissallowed. Bringing up the logon screen means I don't have the wireless access necessary. Even if I let the autologon go through, the non-administrative/parental controlled account has to allow the remote connection. And, even still, if they say yes, once it pops out of the account and goes back to the logon, I'm stuffed because the connection drops. Dameware might be able to get around this, but I'm not familiar enough with it (and don't think I should go with a paid solution until I find out if what should already be possible and free is, in fact, a possibility), so here's what I'm going to try and do with another tech support staff member where I work: 1. We're going to go into Task Scheduler and try to creat a task that when in the request for a remote logon is received in the non-admin side, it is automatically accepted and, then, runs a script to put in the Admin credentials and log the admin account on - where I would get the necessary wireless to, again, RDC into the machine. 2. Use the parental controls to establish the non-admin account's ability to view Task Scheduler/associated script file as 'non-accessible' (to control security for the admin PW). 3. Establish another task in the admin account to automatically logon when the machine goes from 'thawed' to 'frozen'. 4. Then, Bob's our uncle: Logon to admin, use the suggestions for RDC shutdown at: http://www.inspectmygadget.com/2008/01/17/how-to-remotely-shut-down-your-computer/, and it should be a simple process here. The only pain? There's no Deep Freeze 'Wake on LAN' possible over a wireless network, so somebody will still have to turn on the machines. But it's livable if everything else measures up as 'can-do'. This is all highly speculative and any shouts from the interested parties as to how this may/may not be possible and issues to watch out for would be welcome. I'll keep the thread informed for any solution that we find works on this front (or, in the even that this'll never happen, I'll put up the Fail Report). Instead of reiterating the question, I figure that this would cover it. Apologies for the lengthy post, but any help is much appreciated. Cheers, C64User

Hi, Please do not use the WIFI connection utilities provided by manufacturer. I assume that this may be the cause of your issue. You may just let Windows 7 manage the WIFI connection. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Running both at the same time might cause conflict & thus the freeze Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, Juke; Hi, Daniel. There are no 3rd party utilities on the laptops in question and the connection is solely managed by Win 7. Even still, the problem remains that when RDC is employed, the laptop drops back to the logon screen and, regardelss of wireless management, the connection falls away. Any way to fix/regedit this?
