Poor Performance
I have a Lenovo T410 laptop that is about 1 month old. It came with Windows 7 Professional (64) pre-installed, however the performance was so slow I replaced it with the included Windows XP (32) OS. While this did improve the performance somewhat, it is still very poor. When opening a program, or executing tasks within a program, it lags for a very long time before performing the desired action, sometimes up to a couple of minutes. During these lags, the processor usage is low (normal idle), and the HDD light shows no activity and the status is “running”. The computer seems to be just sitting there. When the action finally does start, it seems to perform normally. Also, the settings between sessions are sometimes not saved, icons missing, different settings on programs or devices (mouse, screen brightness, etc.). It seems like I am always reconfiguring the settings. The internet response is slow, it takes a long time to access a web page. Again, it seems like the computer is just sitting there. My home page is a local html file on my hard drive, and it takes a long time to load it. During these lags, the internet icon in the tray, shows little activity. The internet speed test shows a relatively decent connection (13 Mb/s down, 2.5 Mb/s up). Running the T410 next to my old T60 for comparison (both on the same wireless connection), the T60 is much faster and performs much much better. Both the T60 and the T410 have the same programs installed, Windows XP SP3, and generally the same configuration. I kept the Windows 7 hard drive intact and installed Windows XP on a new hard drive, the same performance issues occur with either drive. I have tried the usual diagnostics - disabling multiple programs including the AV program, however these seem to make no difference in the performance. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? One possibility is that the OS is searching for some resource that it thinks ought to be there and is waiting for a timeout period. This seems unlikely given a fresh install of Win XP, however. You could check the RAM using memtest86+ (http://www.memtest.org/ ), but given your statement that the unsatisfactory performance occurs whether the OS is Win 7 or Win XP, and the fact that the computer is about 1 month old, I'd get in touch with Lenovo for warranty repair, or return it for a replacement or refund. http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/lenovo_solw.pdf
