Pool Pairing with different SQL Versions

S4B: Central Site "SA" with Front End Pool "PA1" (3 FE servers) and Mediation Pool "PA2". PA1 uses a SQL instance allocated on SQL Server Enterprise 2014 Cluster "SQLA"

We want to deploy DR to "PA1", so we're going to deploy on other physical location, the lowest posible infrastructure.

Could I deploy an unique server with this roles ??:

  • SQL Server Standard 2014
  • Enterprise Pool "PB" with only a FE Server. Also, Mediation roles is included.

Hi Carlos

When you plan which pools to pair, you must keep in mind that only the following pairings are supported:

Enterprise Edition pools can be paired only with other Enterprise Edition pools. Similarly, Standard Edition pools can be paired only with other Standard Edition pools.
Physical pools can be paired only with other physical pools. Similarly, virtual pools can be paired only with other virtual pools.

Pools that are paired together must be running the same base operating system.

Neither Topology Builder nor topology validation will prohibit pairing two pools in a way that does not follow these recommendations. For example, Topology Builder allows you to pair an Enterprise Edition pool with a Standard Edition pool. However, these types of pairings are not supported.

Better to have a distributed model of front end pools where you deploy pairs of front end pools across 2 geographic sites  which will  give you the best HA solution in case of disaster

HI Carlos

For your question

Could I deploy an unique server with this roles ??:

  • SQL Server Standard 2014
  • Enterprise Pool "PB" with only a FE Server. Also, Mediation roles is included.

As per my knowledge we should not deploy enterprise pool to run on a local SQL instance and its not supported config.

2) On the case of using a second server to allocate DB, is it necessary SQL Enterprise Versin ?? (PA1 uses a Enterprise versin...)
