Pointing shell folders to network location
Hi,I have a server where I store all of my files. It has separate volumes for pictures, documents, games, applications, videos etc.In Windows Vista I could change my shell folders in the registry to point to netwotrk locations. Since I have several computers in the house it was far easier to organise things this way. Everyone shared a single location for pictures, for example.Another benefit was that my personal folder pointed to a network location, and that meant when I reinstalled the system, or if, heaven forbid, a virus hit, the work I had to do backing up files on the client was minimal to none, since it was all on the server. With Vista's lack of ability to back up to network locations without a third party product on each machine, this setup also achieved a simple backup solution for all user data - straight from server, to external drive. In Windows 7 I disabled offline files, indexing, homegroup and libraries. Then updated my shel folders to point to network locations as I had done in previous versions of windows. This then resulted in "unsupport location" error messages and the locations became inaccessible to Windows 7.I noticed that disabling libraries also removed the "documents" entry from the start menu. I really don't want to use indexing, offline files, libraries and homegroup in my environment, as the structure I have is well organised and these "features" only bog down the systems with redundant technologies. How can I point (at least), my documents to a network location without having to turn on these features?

Hi, I have tried editing some items of the following and set the addresses of network share (UNC) to the following location and it worked: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders Then you can access the contents of these folders in Libraries. For your reference, I would like to share the following as well: Registry Settings for Folder Redirection in Windows Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li - MSFT

Yo9u have to have libraries enabled for this to work, and I didn't have it enabled, and as much as it irritates me to have to enable libraies, my need for redirected folders is greater than my dislike of libraries...
