Hi bchdata,What makes you think it isn't working? Defragmenter works in the 'background' with no visible user interface. There is actually no 'visible' means of telling that it is working. You could use an alternative defragmenter such as P{erfectDisk or Diskeep (not free i'm afraid) or manually defragment from the command prompt.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk; Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org; Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org;

At 15.00 I had the "Defragmentation" window opened, and I saw no defragmentation.In that window I can see right now that last defragmentation was 3 days ago, where I started it manual.At 15.00 i watched the "Harddisk action indicator", and there was no extra activity.One of the drives is a removable drive that has been added today (earlier then 15.00), and in the defragmentation window it says: "Never defragmented".So I feel quite sure that no defragmentation happaned at 15.00.I have tried the same on 3 different PC's, with the same result.GreatingsBent Højstrøm

Hi Bent,I personally don't use Windows own disk defragmenter, frankly it isn't all that good. I much prefer PerfectDisk which does a better job. I'm in the UK so i've scheduled defragmenter to start defragmenting Windows 7 at 10pm tonight. I'll see what happens at 10pm and let you know.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk; Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org; Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org;

Hi Bent,Well defragmenter hasn't started. However, having examined the Windows Scheduler it does have a trigger which relies upon the PC being completely idle for 3 minutes before defragmenter starts. If the PC isn't idle then the schedule will not start. I've actually been a little too busy today so, obvioulsy, when the defragmenter was due to start the PC was not idle. I'll have to reschedule another defragmentation for a time that I can allow the PC to be idle and see if the schedule kicks in.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk; Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org; Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org;

Hi BentLike John mentioned, the built-in Defrag runs as a Low Priority/Background process. It is designed to pause when the computer is being used.Changing the schedule to run every day may be too often, if the system is used a lot. Even if it is not being used often, that's still too often, in my opinion.Go to Administrative Tools/Task Scheduler and navigate to Microsoft/Windows/Defrag.In the right side window, select the History Tab and take a look at the log to see how the defrag has been behaving.Hope this helps.Thank You for using Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

Hi Bent,Has your daughter considered using the freeware defragmenter called Defraggler (www.defraggler.com)? I looked at it a year or so ago and was quite impressed. It does have a scheduler and, more importantly, that all important graphic interface so you can see what is going on. Might be worth a look. The current version 1.14.159 does run on Windows 7.To be honest this software developer does develop some really good software. I regularly use CCleaner (and recommend it) and for those times when you inadvertantly erase a valuable file, Recuva can soon help retrieve it.John Barnett MVP: Windows XP Associate Expert: Windows Desktop Experience: Web: http://www.winuser.co.uk; Web: http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org; Web: http://vistasupport.mvps.org;
