Plain Jane OS
I know there's a separate forum for the interface, but this isn't uniquelyinterface-related. I do serious work on this workstation; I'm punishingall four cores and the memory 12 hours a day every day. I really do not want anything in any software that does not directly relate tomaximizingthe performance of the computer and (or) the efficiency of the operator. I don't dislike Vista, and I dislike 7 even less than I do Vista, but I don't need and do not want the "cool" features of either of these OSes that do not directly relate to my mission. This seems to be falling on deaf ears. My experience has been that it isn't the BSOD's that limited market acceptance, it's the "Gee, I don't need THAT" reaction that has slowed adoption. In Vista, I can simplify the desktop andturn off Aero, and disbalemuchof the interface additions, and I still have a menuing system that fights against me. In 7 I have a menuing system ANDa taskbar that are fighting against me, slowing my efficiency. I'm not pro XP; I installed Vista BETA and have stayed with Vista since the very beginning. I'm used to it. But with XP - and actually, these days, it's my Server 2003 installation - I can customizeAll Programs to allow me to find what I need and to move what I don't need down a layer or two: the top layer holdingfolders for MS,Adobe and AutoCAD products, andthings like the folder for MS Office Tools moved down to a second menu layer where I can get to them easilyif I need them, but don't have to lookat them all the time. I guess I'm a dying breed but I preferfeeling that I am controlling the computer, and am still not comfortable with the computer doing "things" for me that I wantleft up to me andwith it making decisions for me that I wantcontrol over. Thankfully Windows 7 seems to do them better than Vista -- but it's still doing way too much for me that I don't want it to do, or to dowithout my direction. I'd sure like to have all of the advanced features of Windows 7 AND have a greaterability tocustomize thesystem and more controlover how themachinery interacts with me.
