Pinned Shortcuts on the Explorer icon on the Taskbar disappear...

Hi.

As you know, we are able to drag 'n drop folders/files, etc. onto the Explorer icon that is on the Taskbar and then right-click on the Explorer Taskbar icon to see those pinned shortcuts. Recently they started disappearing randomly forcing me to copy them back. After some 5 or 6 times I decided to make a folder on my desktop containing these shortcut links so that I could quickly just drag 'n drop them back on the Explorer Taskbar icon.

Well, about a week ago they disappeared and now I can only copy 4 links and then nothing else can be placed in the Pinned section. No new software has been installed except for the Windows Update files installed on June 10th, 21st & 24th. To make note, this was happening a couple of days before the WU files were installed, so I don't believe any of the updates did this.

Also, I have tried rebooting and shutting down to see if this would clear an error in the Explorer, but nothing has changed.

I'd like to ask if there is a registry entry that I can manually check and/or change that will allow the pinned icon shortcuts to be set so I can start using them again?

Thank you.

I would suggest using System Restore to return the computer to an earlier state.

Unfortunately, my last backup would take my system too far back for me to use. I've been too busy and lacking in thought to make a recent enough image that would have been prior to this issue occurring.

I've searched the registry trying to find where the setting is for the number of Pinned links so I could correct this myself, but have been unsuccessful at discovering its location. Does anyone here know where the Pinned registry setting is located so I can reset it?

Thanks.

My guess it would be in the same place that the one for Jump Lists would be.  Try changing your Jump Lists setting while running ProcMon (filtering with Operation Is RegSetValue) to see if that finds it.  In any case, e.g. if it is affected by the setting for Jump Lists itself, what happens when you change Number of recent items to display in Jump Lists (in Taskbar and Navigation properties)?
