Photo Gallery problem with BMP's
In Microsofts infinite wisdon, they are no longer putting the picture / Fax viewer software in Windows. I have a vendor who sends me regular e-mails with multipart BMP files. Photo Gallery will only print the first page. It will allow me to view all pages, but will only print the first page Is there a workaround? my vendor has the format etched in stone. If there isn't a quick easy fix for photogallery, any recommendations for a good viewer program (preferably free...) that I can set as a default for BMP for hard copies? Thanks in advance, David

Hi David, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. In Windows 7, there is a default picture viewer called Windows Photo Viewer. You can use it to view your digital photos in a variety of ways. You can also print, order prints, attach pictures to an e-mail message, burn, or open photos in another program on your computer. The behavior in Photo Gallery is by design. You can open the location of those picture, select the ones you want to print, right-click them, choose print, after a printer settings, the pictures would be printed one by one. Thank you Miya for your help. I do have further questions though, The first one is "Where is Windows Photo Viewer located" I need it on Win7 ultimate and on Vista Business as well? (Do I need to add it in because it does not show up on my menu (win7) and the search bar cannot find it. I also checked in the control panel and it wasn't a windows component to add. My second one is one that you may not know or be permitted to answer, "Why would they make photo gallery so you can see the other pages but not allow you to print them." If this behavior is by design, there must be a reason that I cannot fathom. I am genuinely curious, and if there is a good enough reason for microsoft to remove the functionality it might give me information to persuade my vendor to rethink the file format. If, for example there was a security issue associated with this particular file format. Thank you again David B-) David

Hello again Miya, After rereading your initial response, and playing some more with Photo Gallery, I think you misunderstood my initial problem. I am not sure where Picture viewer is, but evidently Photo Gallery is using it as my default picture viewer. It must be a component of Photo Gallery, but it is what Photo Gallery is using to display the picture. My real problem is the ability to print this file. It is a multipage .bmp file. In photo gallery I have a tab at the bottom that allows me to switch between pages. Right Click doesn’t work to give me any print options. I can get 4 copies of page 1 very easily, but I cannot figure a way to print any of the other tabs. (pages) of the file. I can see them by selecting the proper tab, but any way I have tried to print them (short of spicing several screenshots together) has not yielded any success. Should I call Support, Windows, Usability? David

OK, we found a workaround... renaming it tif format. This seems odd and that it shouldn't work. Oh well, still tring to figure a simpler solution. Any ideas on why renaming it fixes the problem? David

Hi, Glad to hear that you find a workaround. Since the Photo Gallery was set as default program, maybe it’s not easily for you to find the Windows Photo Viewer. Please change the default programs to check if the Windows Photo Viewer can work as what you want. Click Start – input Default Programs in the search bar – Set your default programs – Choose defaults for this program. You can check the .bmp box to test it. For the Photo Gallery issue, I recommend you also ask this question in Windows Live Solution Center: Photo Gallery Portal. Best Regards, Miya Yao TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Thanks, actually, Photo viwer is not an option directly. Photo Gallery uses Photo viewer by default, so I am effectively using photo viewer. I will sy that this is a major pain. we literally have to save the file, rename it, and then load it to print. I would very much like it for the full picture to be recognized without the hassle. JMHO, this is an undocumented feature. Thanks for your help, David B-)David
