Path too long and SkyDrive sync error

Hi all,

I have a issue with Skydrive in Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

During first sync with my SkyDrive account, Skydrive app generate a "Problem": Files can'te be uploaded because the path of a file or a folder is too long. Go to SkyDrive website to move the item to a different location or shorten its name.

C:\Users\<username>\SkyDrive\...\<Filename.pdf>

Well, I go to my SkyDrive account and modify the filename with a short filename.

The problem is the same.

I have delete the folder, but the problem remaining.

I have delete and rebuild the association with my Skydrive account under "PC settings" menu,...I have upgrade to OneDrive, but the problem is the same.

I have entirely remove all my files in SkyDrive folder under C:\Users\<username>\SkyDrive\ path. But nothing else happend.

And the "We can't connect to your SkyDrive because the path of a file or folder is too long" remain on the top of SkyDrive app.

Someone have any ideas for resolve this trouble?

Many thanks!!

Bye!

Been there done that, Format and make sure your names are small. You cant delete, you cannot even change. If its on your HD MS may come with a patch so we can delete extremely long file names.

I can tell you this, I am so glad I have 2000 backups hanging around my house or I'd be suing MS for data loss.

Preparing now to format a backup drive. Was a file from a backup

You can use any file shredder to fix your problem.

I had same issue. While I sync my OneDrive App on my PC it had yellow triangle with exclamation mark, and error message path is too long. Could not Rename File, could not move it, could not delete it. Used file shredder Utility no success. Tried renaming the file by Bulk files renaming Utility no success.

I fixed this issue by renaming the Folder hierarchy, each folder in hierarchy I rename to a single character till i reach the folder in which file exist. as soon as i rename last sub folder i found yellow triangle with exclamation mark disappeared and I could sync OneDrive app.

The cause of this was not file name. OneDrive take total characters in Path where file is saved including folder names and file name it should not exceed more than 442 characters.

It go like this File name not more than 256 characters Maximum, File location Path 186 characters Maximum

With SkyDrive's (OneDrive) current design, you cannot upload a file if the full path (including the file name) is too long. The path must contain fewer than 442 characters. Please try to shorten the name of your file or the name of subfolders in SkyDrive, or select a subfolder that's closer to the top-level folder, and then try to upload the file again.

Hi Yolanda,

Is there any better solution from Microsoft?

I have hundreds files are saved in my home computer (Windows 7) and I don't want to break my folder structure as well as rename each file to let skydrive sync on my laptop with Windows 8.1.

Thanks
