Patch Breaks Microsoft Management Console
After the recent set of updates, 8 Jun 2010, I can no longer start either the Event Viewer or the Task Scheduler. When I attempt the following error window indicates the Microsoft Management Console has stopped working. I can start the MMC.EXE program and it starts fine. When I try to add the snap-in for either the event viewer to task scheduler the same error window occurs. Other snap-ins work fine. I am running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit). There are lots of old threads on similar subjects and other versions of Windows, but nothing that resolves the problem. I restored the system using the restore point prior to the updates and both the Event Viewer and Task Scheduler work fine. When I re installed the updates I only installed the group associated with Microsoft Office 2007 and the Event Viewer and Task Scheduler work fine. When I re install the remaining 6 or 7 updates for Windows 7 it breaks both the Event Viewer and Task Scheduler. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks,

I am running Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit and I am also having a problem with MMC. If I open Event Viewer and attempt to look at any of the events I get a "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it." Click "Unload the snap-in and continue running" and the following gets thrown at me: FX:{b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510} at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.Internal.SnapInMessagePumpProxy.OnThreadException(Object sender, ThreadExceptionEventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.Application.ThreadContext.OnThreadException(Exception t) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.WndProcException(Exception e) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.OnThreadException(Exception e) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam) at System.Windows.Forms.SafeNativeMethods.UpdateWindow(HandleRef hWnd) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.Update() at System.Windows.Forms.Control.OnEnabledChanged(EventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.LinkLabel.OnEnabledChanged(EventArgs e) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.set_Enabled(Boolean value) at Microsoft.Windows.ManagementUI.CombinedControls.EventPropertiesControl.InitializeEvent(IEventBase evt) at Microsoft.Windows.ManagementUI.CombinedControls.EventDetailControl.InitializePreviewPane(IEventBase evt) at Microsoft.Windows.ManagementUI.CombinedControls.EventDetailControl.RefreshControls() at Microsoft.Windows.ManagementUI.CombinedControls.EventDetailControl.ExecuteRefreshAction() at Microsoft.Windows.ManagementUI.CombinedControls.EventDetailControl.OnAction(ManagementAction action) at Microsoft.EventViewer.SnapIn.MMCEventsResultView.RefreshResults() at Microsoft.EventViewer.SnapIn.MMCEventsResultView.OnShow() at Microsoft.EventViewer.SnapIn.FormControlBase.OnFormShow() at Microsoft.EventViewer.SnapIn.FormViewEx.OnShow() at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.View.ProcessNotification(Notification notification) at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.FormView.ProcessNotification(Notification notification) at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.ViewMessageClient.ProcessNotification(Notification notification) at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.Internal.IMessageClient.ProcessNotification(Notification notification) at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.Executive.SnapInNotificationOperation.ProcessNotification() at Microsoft.ManagementConsole.Executive.Operation.OnThreadTransfer(SimpleOperationCallback callback) Now I am going to assume that these updates maybe my problem as well because I know Event Viewer was working late last week early this week. I am however not having any issues with Task Scheduler. Any ideas would be appreciated. <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} -->

I have the same issue. I am also having issues starting some .NET applications, like Driver Sweeper and the ATI Catalyst Control Center. I am not sure if the .Net apps issue is related or not. Do you guys have any issues like that? I have no issues found with "SFC /scannow" http://www.flickr.com/photos/34763201@N05/4723046411/sizes/l/ Here are screenshots of the Event Viewer crash: http://www.flickr.com/photos/34763201@N05/4723700280/sizes/m/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/34763201@N05/4723700328/sizes/m/ If this doesn't teach us NOT to do Windows Updates, nothing will. Come on Microsoft, reply, look into this, as us for more info, anything. Intel i7 CPU Asus mobo ATI Radeo HD video card 6GB of RAM SDD RAID 0 OS hard drive Windows 7 Pro 64bit Norton Antivirus, Norton Ghost, Microsoft Security Essentials I have Norton Ghost system backups, but I do not wish to restore them if we can fix this clear OS issue. -Derek

Installed another group of updates this morning (23 Jun 2010) and I thought maybe Microsoft would have cleaned up the mess they made on 9 Jun 2010. However this was NOT the case. The Management Console snap-ins Event Viewer and Task Manager were broken by the updates on 9 Jun 2010 and they are still broken !!

I too had this error with Event Viewer. Ran a scan with SFC. Found an error with MMCFxCommon.dll, but the SFC scan could not repair it. I had a copy of the file in an image I made prior to the error cropping up. I used the instructions from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833 to replace the file SFC could not fix. It worked (without even a reboot) and Event Viewer is back.

delao13, Absolutely outstanding and you win the forum prize for today !! I had previously run SFC but did not come up with any errors. Today there was an error with c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\system.windows.forms.dll file and the file in the store was also corrupted. I followed the instructions in the kb link above and now both event viewer and task scheduler are fully functional. My next question would be if there is any reasonable way to fix the corrupted file in the store ?? THANKS AGAIN!
