Partition management
Why is the partition programme of Windows Vista and Windows 7==> Vista second edidion (Vista SE)stucked away so deep and whyisn`t it placed more at the surfacein the control panel? When you have finally found the partition programme in Vista and in Windows 7 (it is at the same place as in Vista) and made your partitions with it then there is no possibilty at all to moveall your libraries (documents, music, videos and so on) at once just with a few clicks to another partition (while this was possible in Windows XP you only needed a partition programme or had to made your partitions during installation) actually there is no possibility at all whatever you try, why isn`t this possible to saperate your OS from your storage? Why doesn`t support Microsoft this feature or must I ask why doesn`t Microsoft recognize this shortage at all and why can`t this partitioning programme be a really major programme just like partition magic or any other partioning programme that you can buy to make partitions with?

The partitioning program (AKA disk management) isn't that hard to get to, I can get to it with 4 mouse clicks.Click the start orbRight click computerClick manageClick disk managementBut why would you want it to be more accesible? This isn't exactly a day to day operation. Asrock K8NF6P, AMD64 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, Palit Geforce 8400GS 256MB, 500GB Maxtor SataII, Asus 1814BLT optical

No ofcourse not it isn`t a daily operations but there are so many other things that are placed in the control panel that aren`t daily operations either. There by do know that whole tribes don`t even knowthat Vista and Windows 7 (Vista SE)have a partition programme at all.So by placing it more at the surface in the control panel will make people aware that it is there.

But the people who need to know how to access this particular tool know where it is and can access it easily. Can you imagine the havoc if an ordinary user who has no idea of the consequences of using such a tool had easy access to it ?Asrock K8NF6P, AMD64 3200+, 1.5GB RAM, Palit Geforce 8400GS 256MB, 500GB Maxtor SataII, Asus 1814BLT optical

IMHO... if you are going to be managing partitions, you really ought to have something available to you that you can use standalone for the time when you blow it. I use Acronis Disk Director 10. There are others. BUT HAVE SOMETHING AVAILABLE TO YOU!!!!! Partitioning a hard drive is not something users do on a daily basis. What you identify as a shortcoming, and I actually agree with you, is not really an issue at all for over 80% of Windows users. For those of us who know what we are doing, we can easily setup up a Windows system with a partition scheme that allows all user data to reside on a separate partition. Windows does not limit you to doing what you are looking to do, but you have to know what you are doing in order to do it right. If you know how to do it in XP, the procedures are not too far off. However, it would be in your best interest to get to know the inner workings of Vista/7 by catching up on how the new OS architecturally differs from older versions.

and yet partitioning is the same...I have roughly 10 partitions total spread over 3 spindles. Win7 (one spindle)(25gb on 36gb raptor)main acronis image backups (one spindle 160gb)Vista and the following on a 500gb spindle.apps which I installdriversNWNNWN2HDTV storageWin7 acronis image backupsMiscSmall sizes makes it childsplay to backup (acronis image) any partition, and thus restore it if the world ends. This way, when I come to install an opsys, I only deal with the one partition, which for vista and Win7 has been a 25gb partition - less than half is used.Unlike Vista install, Win7 install likes to create a separate unnamed 200mb partition for nt boot stuff. When I install the Win7 opsys, I literally unplug the other 2 spindles until it's finished. Plug them back in and I have a live system. This way it doesn't try to dual boot Vista using the 200mb partition. I dual boot easily by changing the target boot partition in the BIOS.So, yes, as previous poster mentioned, you need to know what you are doing. A plentious supply of working partition backup/restore and partition management program/s is a necessity. But don't put it all into one big partition. Unless you back it up daily!!! Start Orb -> diskmgmt.msc (GUI)or diskpart.exe (CLI)Edit: As per your separation of user data from the operating system, you can use Folder Redirection to move your files to another location, e.g., D:\Users\MyUserName.
