Page cannot be displayed error message - neither IE or Firefox will connect however email works
Dell Dimension 4600 with Win XP Home connected to cable provider via Dell TrueMobile 2300 router Problem: laptop can access Internet wireless thru router, however the desktop browsers will not connect. Odd thing is that email works. Cleaned up temp files, cache, disk cleanup, etc. Ran anti-spyware, tried turning off firewall, rebooted modem and router, etc. No go. Still get "page cannot be displayed". Called cable ISP tech support and checked all settings. Still no go. Tried all tricks on Microsoft web site, diagnostics, system restore, etc. Will not work and yet I can still get email so it is connected to the Internet. Tech support suggested that is was a router problem, but why would it work wireless and not wired. ??? Owner said there was a redirect to a ____ site a while back... could that have changed some settings and caused this problem?? Scanned to spyware and viruses but nothing. Any one know if there is some way to fix this... sfc or registry fix?? Thanks!1 person needs an answerI do too

Have you checked your HOSTS file? Are you using a VPN to connect to your e-mail server (or work network)? If you start IE and go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced and click RESET does that help?-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

I would check DNS settings before going crazy. Make sure your computer is resolving host names properly. ie: type www.nextstepnetworks.com for instance, and see if it comes up with an ip address.ipconfig /all on a command prompt should show you the ip settings on the computer. Who knows, perhaps you have set the ip address of the desktop as a fixed one, then kept some old DNS settings for the DNS servers, etc.So, first thing I'd do is run ipconfig /all on boh computers and check for differences. Easy things can several times give you the best results, especially before going nuts and starting to reformat computers, hit them with basbeball bats, etc.Cheers! MCSE - www.nextstepnetworks.com

This is the most frustrating computer problem I've had in a long time. I checked the Hosts file and it's fine. It's not a VPN, just 3 home computers going thru a Dell TrueMobile router. The two wireless ones work fine, but the wired desktop's browsers WILL NOT CONNECT. Email comes thru though. Grrrr!! Called the ISP tech support again. We ran ipconfig and she said that the IP address was the router address. Then she suggested downloading the drivers for the network card and reinstalling them. Did that, put them on a thumb drive and installed them. Didn't work. Don't want to mess with the router too much because they'll get bumped offline with the two computers that still work. Ran Hijackthis and removed one BHO that was a problem. Can't find any other obvious things wrong there. It is set to Obtain IP address automatically and all the other settings are correct... checked them over and over. Why it's it obtaining the correct IP address?? What else can I check? Thanks for any ideas. P.S. I also tried using Firefox Portable from the thumb drive.... didn't work.
