A little on my system:

HP Presario CQ62-200 CQ62-219WM WQ778UAR 15.6" LED Notebook
Dual Boot: W7 64Bit Ultimate/W8 64Bit Pro
AMD Athlon Dual-Core
CLock 798 MHz (199x4)
2811 MB Ram

Hooked up to AOC monitor, one Toshiba external HD, one Seagate external HD

Using CoreTemp I find under W7 that temp's run from about 23C to 35C--Outlook open 5 desktop gadgets.  CPU and RAM usage varies greatly from 20% to 80%, but temp is pretty stable.

With CoreTemp under W8 tends to run 77C-80C.  CPU and RAM usage pretty much the same.

Max Temp for overheating is 115C according to CoreTemp.

Anybody else notice W8 running hotter than W7?  Performance otherwise has been great, but I guess my hardware is not up to W8.

This is most likely due to CoreTemp not beeing 100% compatible with Windows 8. Have you tried using another tool to monitor the temps just to doublecheck?

To me it sounds quite strange that changing the OS will increase the temperatures as well...

I am also having the problem with Windows 8 overheating. It runs around 7C hotter on idle than compared to Windows 7.

My laptop is a HP DV6 with i7 2670qm processor with switchable graphics (Intel and ATI) and i am using Intel graphics as i have no need to use the ATI card unless i am gaming. I noticed that it does run hotter, in Windows 7 i run about 47C on idle, and in the same environment, on Windows 8 it runs around 55C with spikes hitting 60C doing nothing but idling.

I have the latest drivers for my graphics card. How can i fix this problem as it is a serious problem because my fans are running non stop now. Members over at the HP forum are also reporting overheating issues with Windows 8. My core temps on the CPU are sitting 7C higher on idle compared to Windows 8. 

Which powerplan do you use? Make sure you use Balanced.

To address some questions above:

1.  I cleaned up the innards, re-coated the CPU with fresh thermal & in short... same thing

2. Power Plan is balanced

3. I did try other temp monitors-- +++ I can actually feel the heat on W8

4.  All drivers are up to date

I really had no reason to shift to W8 except for professional curiosity, hence the dual boot.  It's a cheap usable laptop so it looks like a hardware/OS interaction in my case judging that my heating problem is much worse than others.  Double the Celsius reading while others (on other forums) are mostly reporting a 5-10 C change.

I'll hang on to W8 as a second boot system and see if there are any changes in performance as updates come in (sort of doubt it).  If W8 becomes dominant in the market, then looks like its time to purchase a better laptop ;-(

Run OpenhardwareMonitor and look at the CPU Speed. Is it always running at full speed?

I've had the same issue since upgrading to Windows 8 on a Fujitsu T901. Not saying it's Microsoft's fault. It could just as easily be a buggy driver from Fujitsu.

Generally speaking, the CPU seems to be running hotter than it did with Windows 7.

More specifically, I ran a Windows Defender Full Scan and after only a minute or 2, the CPU temp shot up to 85-90 degrees for about a minute and got up near 95 a few times and then the machine froze and I had to power it off.

set the cooling policy to active in power options. Does this make a difference?

Thanks Andre. Both are set to active and were set to active when I did my scan test. I have my mem dump set to small mem file so if I lock up again hopefully get something to look at. The event log has a few msgs about the processor being limited by firmware when it gets to hot but that's about all I have right now.

do you use the latest BIOS?

yes I installed all the Win 8 drivers from Fujitsu including the latest BIOS

which powerplan do you use? Also run OpenhardwareMonitor. Is the CPU clock speed lowered or doe it stay at maximum speed all the time?

I use the balanced plan unmodified except CPU Cooling Batt/Ac set to active. In terms of processing speed, the CPU behaves normally as far as I can tell. It's idle at <5%, spikes depending on what I'm doing, returns to <5% idle. Other than occasional browser / Modern UI game (not PC class games), weekly backup, and defender scans, I don't really do anything day-to-day that would tax the CPU for an extended time. In the defender scan I referenced earlier, when I stopped the scan the CPU % and temp both went down as expected. I might try a WEI and track the temp later tonight to see what happens.

It tuns out to a fact, that this is a Windows 8 Problem. After 1 week of tesing I do see on an:

Lenovo N200 3000 that works well on Windows 7 and Windows 8 that...

(using same/latest drivers)

- CPU is around 5 degree less hotter on Win8

- GPU is 15 degree hotter on Win8 (same graphic driver)

This all on same CPU load and system on latest drivers. So it has nothing to do with cleaning the fan, drivers or old HW.
=> Windows 8 is not yet there, where Win7 already is. In consequence I go back on Win 7 and wait until Win 8 soved the issues. Btw I saw that Flash is using much more CPU on Win8. The main problem is that the GPU gets much hotter. I could understand 5 degree for CPU (but there is no more load), but 15 degree more on GPU is not acceptable.

Same problem, also using CoreTemp. Seems to happen more often in metro apps. Win8 Pro x64; Dell Inspiron E1505 (6400); Intel T7400.

I AM GETTING THE SAME PROBLEM in Windows8!!!!!!!!!!!   thought it was my new ram until i reinstalled and put windows 7 back on my rig and the ram worked prefectly fine and the GPU worked excellent,

thought hmm what if it was a VIRUS, so i cleared the hdd, cleared the ram, mohterboard battery a couple times then installed windows 8 and finally downloaded gta4 again weeooo slow internet, then im playing gta4 for not only 1 minute and it LIGHTs UP MY GPU  FWAAA BEEEEEP it goes and the screen goes all different colors WTF windows 8 = PLEASE HELP fix this!!

be careful when flashing the bios - you can make it unrepairable very very easily

CORE TEMP iduno however my thoughts are that windows 8 makes all hardware / software compatible however probably works on the newer system / hardware/ software first to a dime, then goes down the line making repairs to older systems/ hardware/ software to be able to run smoother and more efficient.
