Outlook express as default mail client
I'm using Windows XP Pro and Outlook Express 6. I want Outlook to be my default mail client, and to open a new message when I click an email address link online, so I went into the tools->options and clicked "make default". It will not stay that way!! As soon as I leave the options page, it goes right back to being the not-default. I have no idea what mail program thinks it is the default then, but it's certainly not OE. I used to have Microsoft Outlook 2007 installed as part of my office 2007 set, but I uninstalled that component because it used to try and make itself the default all the time. Outlook would open a new message when I clicked links online, but now that it's gone clicking a link does absolutely nothing. Any ideas? Thanks!1 person needs an answerI do too

OK. We can do that. If you still have any problems wit kinks after this, post back.Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults | Custom + Down Arrow | Select the radio button for Outlook Express. Make OE the default e-mail client: http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspx For links in e-mail: http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspx And: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098 Restores OE to the E-mail clients list in Internet Optionshttp://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/oe_client.htm If you have MS Outlook installed, also see #13: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#13 "Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098 Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]

OK, now OE is set as the default mail client and when I click an email address it opens my OE window, but it does not open a new message. Can this be done? Thanks!

Craigslist, usually, but also the University of Connecticut directory

If it is just a few sites, and others work OK, and this didn't help....."Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098Then it may be an issue with the site itself. If you copy the Click Here link and paste it in your browser's address bar, will it connect you that way? Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]

I already looked into the support help file you listed, the dll path is in the registry like it should be. No, the link doesn't work if I copy it into the address bar either. It's not just a few sites that do this, I've never gotten it to work with anything. I just offered Craigslist and the directory as the ones that I try to use most often. I appreciate your suggestions, do you have any more ideas that I could try? Thanks!

Just to be clear, you can click on a link in an e-mail and Internet Explorer will open? But a link at a Website that should open an OE composition window does not work?Is this 100% correct? Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail]
