Outlook Express suddenly can not find newly created files through the attachment mode.
Outlook Express cannot find newly created files to attach them. The files are there in My Documents and Outlook Express can still see all the old files, but every new file for the last month is not seen and can not be attached. I even typed in the file name and it says cannot find file of that name. I am sending the files now through 'You send it' an on-line service, but a hassle to use another program. I've checked the 'views' and they seem ok. Please help!1 person got this answerI do too

Create Mail | Insert | File Attachment and Browse to My Documents. If you do not see the file, at the bottom of the dialog box where it says: Files of type, is All Files displayed? If you open My Documents and right click on a file, can you Send To | Mail Recipient? If you move the file to the Desktop, can you attach it in either of the above means to an e-mail?Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

Yes, 'All Files' is displayed.Sometimes I can send it by right clicking, but the last two, it said 'No profiles have been created. To create a new profile, use the Mail icon in the Control Panel.' Which I tried to do, but when I went to the Mail icon, it was clear that I was creating a 'profile' for Outlook and not Outlook Express. I do not use Outlook.I moved the file to the desktop, but Outlook Express could not see it there either even though it saw everything else.

I don't understand where the reference to 'profile' is coming from. Make sure OE is set as default.Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults | Custom + Down Arrow | Select the radio button for Outlook Express.Make OE the default e-mail client: http://www.oehelp.com/oedef.aspxFor links in e-mail: http://www.oehelp.com/oelnk.aspxAnd: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098Restores OE to the E-mail clients list in Internet Optionshttp://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/oe_client.htmIf you have MS Outlook installed, also see #13: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#13 "Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work Using Outlook Express as Default:http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

Followed your instructions and set OE as default, restarted computer, no change in ability of OE to find new files when browsing for them using the attachment feature. Still cannot see new file on desktop either. But, I can now send the files using right click on the file itself in My Documents. Thank You Bruce!Went to three of the links you provided, did not find any answers to the problem of OE not 'seeing' newer files using the attachment feature. Just wonder what has changed? This feature has worked for years until a month ago.

From the change you describe now, I don't think OE is the problem at this point. You might want to bring this to the Files, Folders and Search forum. Explain the issue about not being able t browse to a file, and also that a search doesn't reveal the files. It might be a good idea to include this URL so they can see this thread and what was done so far.http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpnetwork/thread/a5868ffc-ecb9-4c77-8de3-5522291e402dBruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

As a workaround, you can use Explorer to browse to the file and then drag the file overtop the OE message window and drop it and it will become attached to the message. steve "Intermountain" wrote in message news:c9717ca2-20da-4614-89af-105178e7c800...Followed your instructions and set OE as default, restarted computer, no change in ability of OE to find new files when browsing for them using the attachment feature. I am new to forums and don't know how to include that URL (Files, Folders and Search), but would like to do so. Went to FAQ about forums, but did not find how to. Good idea though. Checked out the forum and it looks like a good place to include.

OK. You know where the forum is now, correct? Start a new thread there just like you did here. Explain what is happening and that you started in this forum. Copy & paste this into the new post.------------------------------------Here is what was discussed in the XP - Networking, Mail And Getting Online Forum.http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpnetwork/thread/a5868ffc-ecb9-4c77-8de3-5522291e402d-----------------------------------This way, anyone can click on this link in the new thread and see this thread. It will just save a lot of questions about what you and I have already covered.Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]

That workaround worked well, thanks Steve. I will use that, or right click and send to mail recipient since we cannot find out why the new files don't show up when usin Insert, File Atachment mode. The new files/folders still do not show up when browsing in this mode.

This is a long shot, but try in a new identity.File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages and Address Book from the old identity and delete it.Note: Do not use the word Main in the name of the new identity. How to Create and Use Identities in Outlook Expresshttp://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=209169Bruce Hagen ~ MS-MVP [Mail]
