Outlook Express 8 or 6, plus can't send or receive mail
Previously posted in XP forumbut somehow the message was picked up and posted in Windows 7 forum?? After installing a new Norton security system - from my mail server, I also atttempted to update Outlook Express 6 to OE 8. I now get the following error message:Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'Bills Mail', Server: 'Mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid command', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18 I can't receive or send mail. I still have my existing addresses but nothing else opens. I have checked my ISP account info. along with security I.D. and all is OK. I have tried to re-enter all accout data several times without any effect. I have closed the Norton security for both incoming and outgoing mail and this didn't have any effect either. I have cleaned up all data in my file, still no help. When I tried to update to OE 8, only OE 6 appeared! Tried several times to re-install OE 8 only to repeatedly be sent back to OE6. Have been trying to correct problem for 4 days without any solutions1 person needs an answerI do too

Firstly, there is no such thing as Outlook Express 8. Version 6 was the last one made so the question is: Are you using OE6 to access Comcast POP3 mail, or are you using IE6 or IE8 to access their Webmail site?Bruce HagenMS-MVP Oct. 1, 2004 ~ Sept. 30, 2010Imperial Beach, CA

Thanks for correcting me. I am using OE6 to access the Comcast POP 3 mail site. I am also using Mail.comcast.net and SMTP.comcast.net as my mail server POP 3 contacts; although one site recommended using SMTP537.comcast.net in place of SMTP.comcast.net. That didn't work either. I have dogedly worked at this problem for five days now and I am either going to get to my mail by repairing the problem or simply going back to a previous date to restore my system. Any concrete methods to help?

Norton and OE do not get along well. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 I would get something much less invasive. Your computer will run 30 % faster and will thank you. steve <paxbar> wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...Previously posted in XP forumbut somehow the message was picked up and posted in Windows 7 forum?? Thanks for the reply and recommendation. I use Comcast.net as my provider and the Norton security suite comes with the Comcast set-up, so I used it as I had Norton in the past and it worked fine. Back before I had Norton, I had McAfee and hated it - so many problems that I replaced it with Norton. If getting rid of Norton is the answer to my problems, is there a better security program out there? I'm not too up on these issues and if any security system is not compatable with my basic platform, I want it out and gone. Thanks again for your help, I'm going through your many paged list of things to do to clean up and make my system more efficient but would also appreciate hearing from you about a dependable security program that I can replace Norton with to keep future problems from occurring.

I use www.microsoft.com/security_essentials and then I go to Settings and with Vista disable the eml file type from being scanned and in XP disable both the dbx and eml file types. steve <paxbar> wrote in message news:Email removed for privacy...Thanks for the reply and recommendation.
