Outlook 2010 crashes Windows Explorer when I drag and drop file attachments to Network Shortcut locations
After migrating users from XP to Windows 7, I trained people who missed their Network Places to create Network Shortcuts in Windows Explorer. However, when users drag and drop a file attached to an Outlook message to such a shortcut (Computer | foldername) , Windows Explorer crashes. Dragging attachments to the same folder, accessed directly (\\serverroot\sharename), causes no problems. Dragging files from any source other than Outlook does not cause the crash either. This occurs on multiple computers and reproduces reliably in my environment. Computers are running 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, and 32-bit Outlook 2010 SP1. This happens when my AV is disabled. Event viewer shows the following: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 8/1/2011 8:57:34 AM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: SAFFRON-01.*********.com Description: Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7601.17567, time stamp: 0x4d672ee4 Faulting module name: SHELL32.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7c9a6 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00000000002d647a Faulting process id: 0x8b54 Faulting application start time: 0x01cc504a87b51fbd Faulting application path: C:\Windows\explorer.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll Report Id: d28efced-bc3d-11e0-9a43-842b2baa5a3a Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Application Error" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>100</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2011-08-01T12:57:34.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>25229</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>SAFFRON-01.*********.com</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>explorer.exe</Data> <Data>6.1.7601.17567</Data> <Data>4d672ee4</Data> <Data>SHELL32.dll</Data> <Data>6.1.7601.17514</Data> <Data>4ce7c9a6</Data> <Data>c0000005</Data> <Data>00000000002d647a</Data> <Data>8b54</Data> <Data>01cc504a87b51fbd</Data> <Data>C:\Windows\explorer.exe</Data> <Data>C:\Windows\system32\SHELL32.dll</Data> <Data>d28efced-bc3d-11e0-9a43-842b2baa5a3a</Data> </EventData> </Event> I originally posted this in the Outlook forum, but after seeing the event viewer logs, the forum administrator sent me here. Hi, Thanks for the post. According to this Event Log, We could find out that this crash is caused by the faulting module shell32.dll which exposes a COM interface to some applications in order to access the System services or functionality. Usually, The threads or module of some applications that are not fully compatible with Windows 7 could be the cause of this issue. Maybe they applied for an API which can not be supported by shell32.dll. So I suggest you to boot the computer in Safe Mode with Networking to determine whether the 3rd party software cause it. You may also use ShellExView to disable 3rd party plug-ins to check this kind of issue. I wasn't able to try this experiment in safe mode, as Outlook won't load without the licensing service. I downloaded and ran ShellExView, and disabled all the extensions that the program would permit. I still triggered the Explorer crash every single time I dragged a file from Outlook 2010 SP1 to a network shortcut. I did this experiment on a new installation of Windows 7 x64 SP1 with not much software installed on it. (And those programs were turned off using ShellExView).Philadelphia, PA

Hi, Have you tried the Clean Boot Mode? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 I cannot reproduce the situation you describe on my personal computer, So this should be caused by 3rd party software. Please disable all the 3rd party services and autorun entries for a test. Hi Juke - Unfortunately, starting in clean boot mode won't work for testing, since some combination of services are required to let me use that network shortcut, and I still haven't figured out which ones they are. Starting in Safe Mode with networking won't work, as Outlook will not start without the Office licensing service. I'm still plugging away at this, though. I reliably reproduce it with all non-Microsoft services disabled. - Joe Philadelphia, PA

Hi, Please start the network related services, then try it again. Also, you may use autoruns which is form System internal toolkit to disable all the 3rd party autorun entries for a test. na, this is still a problem and reproducable with local user, local admin, local outlook file. This is not solved. We set up entire new system(s) from scratch does same thing. We also can duplicate on Win Server 2k8 r2. So this is not a network issue, not a domain issue. not exchange issue (since we can repo without even attached to mailbox). It is reproduced more frequently using a network path but reguardless when we see a slight delay when using the outlook 'insert hyperlink' window (even pointed to C:), it crashes. So it seems related to a internal delay of some sort that outlook/windows7/2k8r2 won't tolerate. Could it be hyper-v since all these systems are using that i cannot say. Its not AntiVirus, as we tried withotu using any and can reporduce it still. We opened a case too on this issue since its preventing customers from using outlook properly.
