Original Topic in answers.microsoft forum re: TAPI and other services
I posted this:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/tapi-service-is-it-required/bf205f5e-4f27-428c-8fd7-d4281e82ebac
but an answer may be better gotten here.
I realize that the Telephone API is now manual in W7 as opposed to Vista, so good work MS but what services in relation to networking are really necessary.
Thank you for any help offered.

Hi,
The best advice is that most services are so interconnected it if best to leave them
enabled. Often disabling a service will not really improve performance and can cause
strange issues.
BlackViper gives several different configuration suggestions (however I still recommend
using the defaults).

SpiritX is correct of course and Back viper has been a source of services for over a decade. He does offer some info about the dependancies as well as several different setups and the gains (or losses) therein.

Hello,
Thank you both for replying.
I had managed to disable a few "unnecessary" services and while I did initially get some strange results, the system has stabilized, probably due to one service in particular called "SuperFetch".
Cheers
