Optional security update causing DEP errors in explorer
Downloaded tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2264107 and installed, added the registry entry CWDIllegalInDllSearch to this key: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, value set to 2.Also stopped and disabled the WebClient service.Started getting DEP errors in explorer, this error in the application logs:Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: Application ErrorEvent Category: (100)Event ID: 1000Date: 10/13/2010Time: 3:11:07 PMUser: N/AComputer: I-530-2Description:Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x01d725d8.For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.Data:0000: 41 70 70 6c 69 63 61 74 Applicat0008: 69 6f 6e 20 46 61 69 6c ion Fail0010: 75 72 65 20 20 65 78 70 ure exp0018: 6c 6f 72 65 72 2e 65 78 lorer.ex0020: 65 20 36 2e 30 2e 32 39 e 6.0.290028: 30 30 2e 35 35 31 32 20 00.5512 0030: 69 6e 20 75 6e 6b 6e 6f in unkno0038: 77 6e 20 30 2e 30 2e 30 wn 0.0.00040: 2e 30 20 61 74 20 6f 66 .0 at of0048: 66 73 65 74 20 30 31 64 fset 01d0050: 37 32 35 64 38 725d8 From 10/8/10 to 10/11/10 I had 6 explorer crashes with this error. I then set CWDIllegalInDllSearch = 0 (supposedly no different from the default system). This seemed to fix it, until 10/13/10 when it crashed again. At that point I uninstalled WindowsXP-KB2264107-x86-ENU.exe. No more DEP errors.I did not try adding explorer.exe to the DEP exception list. My DEP is set to "all programs & Services".My computer is a stock Dell Inspiron 530.Anyone else had this issue??1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi tdwzxe7q, · Is there any specific purpose to make the registry changes? You may want to perform a system file scan to check for any system file corruptions. a. Click Start, All programs and then Accessories. Click Command Prompt.b. In the Command Prompt window type “sfc /scannow” (without quotes) and then press Enter.c. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check for the issue. Refer to this article for more information.
