Hi, Firstly, to make the issue clear, please capture a screenshot on the pop-up for our further research: Capture a screenshot ============== 1) Press the Print Screen key (PrtScn) on your keyboard. 2) Click the "Start" menu, type "mspaint" in the Search Bar and Press Enter. 3) In the Paint program, click the "Edit" menu, click "Paste", click the "File" menu, and click "Save". 4) The "Save As" dialogue box will appear. Type a file name in the "File name:" box, for example: "screenshot". 5) Make sure "JPEG (*.JPG;*.JPEG;*.JPE;*.JFIF)" is selected in the "Save as type" box, click “Desktop” on the left pane and then click "Save". Please use Windows Live SkyDrive to upload the screenshots and share its URL with us. In addition, please also let us know the Operating System of the computer which hosts this share folder which contains the word and excel files. At this time, please also try the following on the Windows 7 and Windows Vista computer: 1. Open Network and Sharing Center. 2. Click “Change Advanced sharing settings”. 3. Select “Turn off password protected sharing” under “Turn off password protected sharing”. Hope this helps. Thanks. Nicholas Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forumNicholas Li - MSFT

Hi, Thank you for gathering the information. From the screenshot, I noticed that you were accessing the file via a website. This should be differnet from accessing the files with a share folder. I just suspect this should be related to the website which was hosted by the Windows 2003 Server. After researching, I suspect this may be related to some Internet Explorer settings: 1. In Internet Explorer 8, click Tools and the click Internet Options. 2. In the Internet Options window, switch to Security tab, click Local intranet and click Custom Level. 3. In the new-opened window, under “User Authentication - Logon”, please select “Automatic logon with current user name and password” and click OK to apply this setting. 4. Then back to the Internet Options window, switch to the Advance tab, under “Security”, ensure that the “Enable Intergrated Windows Authentication” item has been checked. 5. Then click OK to apply all the settings and close Internet Explorer. 6. Try again to see if the prompt still appears. If this persists, we also need to check this website. For this, it is recommended that you go to our IIS forum for futher investigation. Thanks again for your time and cooperation. Nicholas Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum Nicholas Li - MSFT

Hi, Thank you for writing back. I am sorry for the inconvenince, please understand that I will continue to help you. After researching with our colleaguew, we get the following: Internet Explorer May Prompt You for a Password (Please note the section of “Internet Explorer prompts for a password when you are using Windows Integrated authentication”.) Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Add your site’s URL and your domain name to Trusted Sites and configure the policy for the trusted sites to "Automatically login with current username and password." 1) In Internet Explorer 8, click Tools and the click Internet Options. 2) In the Internet Options window, switch to Security tab, click “Trusted sites” and click Sites. 3) Add the URL of this site and your domain name and close the Trusted sites window. 4) Go back to Internet Options, select “Trusted sites” and click “Custom Level”. 5) In the new-opened window, under “User Authentication - Logon”, please select “Automatic logon with current user name and password” and click OK to apply this setting. 6) Then click OK to apply all the settings and close Internet Explorer. 7) Try again to see if the prompt still appears. 2. When you access this file sharing site, please try using the server name as the address instead of its domain name and see how it works. Meanwhile, for your reference, I would like to share the following article with you: Change Internet Explorer Security settings Hope this helps. Thanks. I tried as you recommended with no luck. But I found that when I used Safari instead of IE I did not get the popup. Since our customers are IE users this would not be seen as a solution but a temporary fix. Thanks Bill

Hi, Thank you for your update. Please double check whether the site is using the Basic Authentication. If so, it seems that when the site is configured with Basic Authentication, the username and password do not pass entirely from Internet Explorer to Microsoft Office program. Please apply the following hotfix and add the HTTP share FQDN to AuthForwardServerList registry entry with the following Knowledge Base to check how it works: You are prompted to enter your credentials when you access an FQDN site by using a Windows Vista-based client computer that has no proxy configured Nicholas Li TechNet Subscriber Support in forum Nicholas Li - MSFT
