Opening/Printing Files Across a Router
I have recently purchased a Linksys wireless router for use in a home/office. I have a laptop with Windows XP which connects wirelessly to the router and two Vista desktops (call them D1 and D2) which are connected with by ethernet cable to the router. This wireless router was bought to replace a Linksys wired router. There are shared files (Word documents especially) on one of the desktops (D1) that the other desktop (D2) accesses on a regular basis. The issue mainly arises when I open/print a Word document. With the new router it takes quite long time to open these files, and an even longer time (upwords of five minutes) to print (the printer is connected to D1). The XP laptop (connected wirelessly) can also open and print files much more quickly than can D2 (connected by ethernet cable). Is there anything that can be done to decrease the lag time when accessing files on D1 by D2? I tried calling Linksys and they told me I should contact Microsoft.

Possibilities abound (and their fixes):- faulty LAN cable on D2. (try replacing cable on D2.)- faulty NIC on D2. (install PCI NIC to verify.)- faulty port on router (that D2 is connected to.) (try swapping to a different port.)- SP1 not installed on D2 (install SP1.)- flakey firmware on router (check with Linksys support site for update.)- speed autonegotiation problem between D2 and router. What does Windows report the link speed as? (try setting speed manually, in device manager.) Take a look at these, try them out. Please post back with results.
