Onecare & Windows 7
MICROSOFT, Windows & OneCare, creators of both programs, Are you going to ditch OneCare? Windows 7 presents me with a list of none Microsoft options for anti Virus programs, but not OneCare why is that? I paid for anti virus software but now I cant use it! To add insult to injury, I backed up my machine before I installed the new Microsoft Windows on my backup software which just happens to be? Yes youve guessed it! OneCare!! Can the left hand tell the right hand whats happening pleaseYes I have everything on another PC, but why is Windows 7RC is out of the OneCare?

I don't believe anywhere, either on the box or Microsoft's site, does it say that One Care will run on Windows 7 so I don't think you paid for something that you cannot use. My understanding is that One Care will not be supported on Windows 7. See this post.http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/0da6c780-7add-44da-ae06-fc4ac5223155

You are amazed at the fact that a product Microsoft announced was being discontinued last November is not supported on a developmental OS that won't go final until months after the discontinue date? Why is this question still even being asked? Microsoft has not hidden the fact that OneCare is being replaced by a free product later this year. They have also never said that OneCare would ever be supported on Windows 7 - it is XP and Vista only. Again, you are choosing to use a developmental OS - it is not a forced upgrade. The left and right hands do know what the other happen to be doing in this case. As long as you are using Vista or XP, you can use OneCare. If you want to use Windows 7 you will need to look elsewhere and there are several free products that will do the job.If they stop providing virus updates under XP and Vista, ask for a refund. If not, it is still what it was - internet security for those platforms. No offense but this is an old subject that has been discussed again and again and again. It is on the users in this case - not Microsoft. There are lots of other things for which you may be able to blame Microsoft but really not this one....Stephen

Nor do we slavishly read every Microsoft announcement or even receive them. My point is that software by any manufacturer is usually backward compatible. We can even with Windows 7 open and use good old Dos files. The reason it has been quote .discussed again and again and again is because It is NOT on the users in this case IT IS ON Microsoft. Microsoft DID NOT TELL ME A USER that they will discontinue this program. I received no email notification, no Hey you USER go to http://theprogramUuse4virusprotection/backupwillbecomeUSanytimesoon.com What I did receive was an email telling me my subscription was due LAST MONTH APRIL 09 and that they were taking payment. Microsoft then renewed my OneCare subscription LAST MONTH APRIL 09 I have 11 months left to run on it. Maybe the email should have said, get another virus defence system AS WE ARE DISCONTINUING THIS SERVICE ON DATE or THIS SERVICE WILL NOT WORK WITH THE NEXT GENERATION OF WINDOWS BEING RELEASED SOME TIME THIS YEAR!!!! THIS IS WHY THIS is GETTING OLD AND BEING DISCUSSED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN

In defense of both sides of this discussion:- MS did not tell those of us using OneCare that it was being eliminated. I found that out today and by accident. They have our Live ID, why not let us know? Yes, it has been out there in the thread world for some time, but there is simply too much information out there. Some sort of alert to OneCare subscribers saying it will only be supported until some date in the future and don't go to Windows 7 because it won't work, but for Windows 7 this is the recommended solution.- MS did, in fact, tell us that we should not run the RC (or beta) in a production mode and there are those who ignore it. Putting non-production software in test mode into a production environment is kind of like having bottle-rocket fights inside your house. They suggested a separate machine or hard drive or, minimally, a separate partition. When I loaded the beta and then the RC, I did not find anything on the OneCare pages telling me it would run, so I assumed it would not until Windows 7 went into production. - MS OneCare has been the first real solution that has protected my computers at home in such a way that the kids couldn't unknowningly load garbage. The subscription covered all three computers at home under a single subscription. I went from spending 8-10 hours per month keeping things cleaned up so I could use the computers the kids use to simply checking the status of my OneCare Circle and doing what it told me to do. Am I happy it is going away? No. - What is the solution moving forward? Just an old timerJust an old timer

Am I happy it is going away? No. - What is the solution moving forward? Just an old timer Just an old timer Again, Microsoft announced last November that it was being discontinued. It is not a secret and went hand in hand with the annoucement that it is beingreplaced by afree product that is now in testing. Notably, it has also never been listed on the Microsoft site identifying Windows 7 security software providers (it is on the Vista and XP tabs). That site dates back to the Windows 7 beta days. The fact is there has never been a suggestion that Onecare would ever be supported on Windows 7 and (again) was announced as a discontinued product last year. The solution moving forward is simple. You need to pick a program that is compatible with Windows 7 (which will never be OceCare). By the time Windows 7 is out, that list will also include a small-footprint, low resource utilizing offering from Microsoft (Microsoft Security Essentials). Some of us took advantage of the Microsoft beta program and are currently testing it on Windows 7 - I am testing it on Vista and XP virtual machines as well. Microsoft abandoned a failed product that could never shake its initial bad reputation and is replacing it with a small scale program that is drawing a lot of positive reviews. There is really not much to discuss here: 1) OneCare was discontinued as per the public announcement of last year; 2) there was never a suggestion it would run on Windows 7; 3) there are lots of other offerings out there (includling free ones);4) a free offering from Microsoft is forthcoming; and 5) it is simply a matter of the end-user choosing what they want to use.....Stephen

Microsoft is nowbeta testing a new and free solution call Microsoft Security Essentials. I have it loaded and seems not to use a lot of resources and looks good as well.I can't say yet how well it protects but since they had One Care before, I expect it to work okay.

THIS IS WHY THIS is GETTING OLD AND BEING DISCUSSED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN I am not going to engage anyone's temper tantrums so:1) There was a puiblic announcement last November.2) They have never said Onecare would run on Windows 7.3) It has never even been listed as an offering on the Windows 7 page for software security providers (it is for Vista and XP).4) It is not the first time a product has been cancelled (or has not been supported on a new OS).5) The same annoucement that identified Onecare as a cancelled product also made it clear a free offering would be released this year.6) The free product (Microsoft Security Essentials) is out as a beta about which there was (again) an annoucement.7)Quite a few people (myself included) are testing the replacement.8) OneCare still runs on its supported OSs.9) Windows 7has still not been released.10) The automatic renewal of OneCareis something you chose and is (indeed) a completely automated system.11) Prior to the automatic renewal you, like everyone esle, would have received notification that the charge would be made on XXXXX date.12)Microsofttook all of two minutes to charge back the Onecare subscriptionto my card when I called them last August (my cancellation and their auto-renewal overlapped).13) Finally, yes thisis a tired old discussion sinceusers simply need to choose a newsecurity progarm if they want to run WIndows 7.Sorry, but it is really that simple....Stephen
