One computer is not recieving correct router broadcast security (sees WEP rather than WPA-AES) Manually config fails as well.
Hello, I just purchased a Asus CM5570 desktop that came preinstalled with Vista. I booted it up with Vista, ran a burn-in test and checked to make sure everything was working, and all seemed perfect. I then blew the system away and installed a dual boot server2008 and Windows 7 ultimate system and now cannot get the wireless working for the life of me. Both are x64. The odd thing is, every *other* computer in my house (also win7 ultimate) receives a broadcast from my router that is the correct SSID and WPA-AES configuration. However, the Asus, is somehow getting it's own broadcast which is the correct SSID and WEP prompt. I guarantee that my router is only broadcasting one network and that is WPA-AES. How come windows is not getting the correct broadcast from my router on only one machine in the house? Router = Linksys WRT160Nv2, set up with WPA-AES, DHCP, and is currently working with another install of win7 ult. I tried creating a network profile in win7 manually to reflect the correct router settings, but win 7 then throws out an error that there is a network mismatch. The troubleshooter does not auto-fix anything. Everything worked fine under Vista x64, so this must be a driver issue or O/S issue with win7 x64 and server2008 x64. The current drivers under 7 that were auto-installed are Net28x.sys (ralink) and vwifibus.sys (microsoft) I actually do not know the exact model of ralink wifi card that I have because TigerDirect did not send out any detailed specs. I ran a program to capture driver info before I rebuilt the system and under Vista, these were the driver details: /Driver Name : netr28x.sys Address : 0xfffffa6002c01000 File Type : Network Driver Description : Ralink 802.11 Wireless Adapter Driver Version : 2.03.00.0000 built by: WinDDK Company : Ralink Technology, Corp. I am really at a loss with this one. Does anyone have suggestions? The ralink site absolutely SUCKS when it comes to tech support. They barely list their products let alone downloads for software/drivers. Even this Asus site does not list the real name of this wireless card. Thanks in advance.

Replying with the fix. I had also posted in another forum (asus website) and a user there helped brainstorm and we tried the old vista driver rather than the newer Microsoft+ Ralink driver. It is important to note that I after installing the older version, I also had to go into MS Updates and deseclect/hide the newer version from downloading. I just want to point that out for anyone else who may have a similiar problem where an old driver works. Details from the other forum: "Thanks for the suggestion - I ran it and I think all it proves is that Ralink is awful at development and service. The only information return via that program is: Device Description 802.11n Wireless LAN Card [NoDB] Nothing else, not even the company name. The only reason I was albe to discover the company name was by browsing the asus vista driver disk and it has a sub-folder under wireless driver named RT-2870 which I searched on. So actually, I should have mentioned that - I do think I know the model - RT-2870, but ralink website lists the driver I am using but lists it as a USB device, not the PCI device (which it is). Also, I did attempt to use the vista driver from the cd and that .....HA! I just tried it again so I could remember what happened and this time the old vista driver works. (Version 2.3 rather than the 3.1). Proof - newer is not always better. I just had to hide the MS autoupdate as well so MS does not automatically update it (it was set to do so on the next reboot) Thanks for brainstorming with me!" So basically - the old vista 2.3 driver works and the newer 3.1 version that Microsoft is auto-installing with and updating with is breaking the wireles sytem. Not sure if there is a way to escalate this info to someone at microsoft so they can test the update they are sending out?? Again - the versions were: Old Vista x64 driver: WORKS!!! but need to disable the update Microsoft is sending out! /Driver Name : netr28x.sys Address : 0xfffffa6002c01000 File Type : Network Driver Description : Ralink 802.11 Wireless Adapter Driver Version : 2.03.00.0000 built by: WinDDK Company : Ralink Technology, Corp.
