One PC on company network loses connectivity at least once a day
Hello, I'm having problems with one of our PC's at work. I work for a small design firm and my workstation has a RAID array on it that is accessed by all PC's in our company multiple times a day. The workstation has Windows 7 x64 and the PC with the connectivity problem has Windows XP. The XP machine will try to access files on the Windows 7 machine and an error pops up saying that server storage has been exceeded. I've searched the web for this problem and found similar issues, but the registry fixes never work. This problem is not exclusive to Windows 7, as we were having the same problem when the workstation was still using Vista. The only fix that I have been able to use successfully is to restart the Workstation and Server Services, and that is NOT a fix by any means. Sure, the XP machine regains it's connectivity, but it's a hassle to restart the services several times a day. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Windows 7 has a safe limit of 20 connections, any more than that and other connections will be refused. XP only has a limit of 10. If you have data that needs to be shared by more than that, why not keep the data on a server (if you have one). A small server would be idea in your situation and can provide the backup needed for that data.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. I would agree with cdobbs and try and get some sort of data server solution setup. Even a simple linux box with large drives would suffice, it doesn't have to be anything special. One thing you may not realize is each time someone accesses your pc while you are working that takes away from your efficiency even if just a little bit. Maybe you have good enough hardware to not realize it but it is happening. I'd also suggest to implement some sort of backup solution even if its backing up to a usb drive and unplugging it and storing it away once a week. Sure your RAID setup *shouldn't* ever have a cataclysmic failure (multiple disk failure (especially if they are from the same batch), power surge, etc) but if your risking ALL the data of your company on that chance... its best to spend a few bucks to help secure that data.

We only have a total of 4 PC's accessing my workstation from this store, so that can't be the issue. I also do a backup of the entire RAID Array twice a week.

Doesn't matter how many PC's you have, they can open multiple connections. I've seen a single XP PC hold over 50 connections before... fluke perhaps but it happens. I would also rule the following things out: - make sure the nic driver is up to date - make sure its set to full duplex - replace the cat5 cable - if its on a hub\switch swap ports or devices - make sure you don't run cat5 close to power Do you run chkdsk on the drives routinely? defrag them often? It wouldn't matter for this mainly but as a matter of maintenance. edit: also maybe run a ping test between pc's. Let it run for a bit (hour?) and see if you get any packet loss.

• All Drivers are up to date • The NIC is set to Full Duplex • CAT5 Cables have been tested • We tried changing ports on the switch to no avail • CAT5 does not run close to power • The XP machine (problem PC) has been wiped clean and Windows reinstalled twice The only conclusions I have been able to come up with is that "MAYBE" our POS software or UPS WorldShip is causing the problem, but can't find any trace of what is causing the XP machine to lose it's connectivity. I've been all through the Error Logs and can find nothing. I'm ready to pull my hair out!!! I've worked as IS Admin for a much larger company than this and in all my years of experience have never run across anything as annoying as this. Is there ANY possible solutions, other than adjusting the IRPStackSize? I have already done so on both the XP and Win 7 machines. Thanks for all of the input thus far.

Hi, Please temporarily uninstall the POS software and UPS WorldShip software to check the result. If it does not work, please restart the machines in Safe Mode with Networking and then access the files again. Does the error occur in this mode? If the error message persists, please upload it for further research. Thanks, Novak
