On the Windows folder there are large numbers of files that start with $ such as $CrystalSetup, $NtUninstallQ315000$.  The question is is it safe to remove these files?

The $NtUninstall... folders contain uninstall information (and previous copies of files) created when you install an update from Microsoft (WU/AU).These folders can be removed if you don't plan to uninstall the updates in future. However, it's safe to back them up to a removable media and store it before deleting them from the hard drive. DO NOT delete THE $hf_mig$ folder anyway, as it's required for future update installations. You can read more about that @ $NTUninstall folders - Description.$NTServicePackUninstall contains uninstall data for Service Packs.I've no idea what $CrystalSetup folder is. Perhaps it's an uninstall folder created by a third-party program installed in the system.Ramesh Srinivasan, Microsoft MVP [Windows Desktop Experience]
