On same network my Mac has an IP address of 10.0.1.2 and my pc has an address of 10.0.1.4
I believe that both of the IP addresses need to be the same for them to share on the network. How do I know which IP address is the correct one and how do I change the other IP address to match? Thank youJohnnygster

No, 2 machines cannot have the same IP. These are on the same subnet, so should be able to communicate.

As bobdonkey indicated, the each host will have a unique IP on the subnet, which is your case. That's good. If you want to learn about sharing files between a mac and a pc, just do a Google/Bing search for "how to share files between mac and pc". You'll find that there are many sites providing the steps needed to complete this. Visit: anITKB.com, an IT Knowledge Base.

I don't think that is a correct. 2 machines in the network should not have the same ip address. Also to share files yiu don't need the machine to have the same ip address. 2 machine having the same ip is called IP address conflict. An IP address conflict occurs when two computers on a LAN (local area network) or the Internet have been assigned the same IP address. IP conflicts between two computers normally render either one or both of them unusable for network operations. Consequences of IP Address Conflicts Systems handle IP address conflicts in multiple ways. In the past, many systems would simply act as if they were not in conflict, and connectivity to both or all systems would be intermittent and unreliable. In most modern operating systems, the second system to come online with the same IP address on the same subnet as another system would just disable their network interface and give an error until the situation is resolved by the administrator. This allows the original system to continue functioning without disruption, but completely breaks IP base communications for the second system. Of course, in production and critical environments, this result is preferred.
