This could be caused by severe infection by malware that AVG didn't get and/or it could be a hardware issue with the hard drive being in PIO Mode. Back up your data first . The most efficient way to do this will be to pull the drive, put it in a USB external drive enclosure, attach the drive to a working computer and copy off the data that way. 1. PIO Mode explanation and fix from MVP Hans-Georg Michna - http://winhlp.com/?q=node/10 2. If the hard drive is still in PIO Mode after applying Hans-Georg's fix, the drive may be failing. Test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website or use Seagate's SeaTools For DOS. You will create a bootable CD with the file you download. You will need third-party burning software to do this such as Roxio, Nero, or the free ImgBurn. Burn as an image, not as data. http://www.imgburn.com http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/seatooldreg http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=201271 (how-to) Boot with the CD you made and do a thorough test of the drive. If it fails any physical tests, replace it. 3. If the drive tests good, then severe malware infection could be the cause.
