Offline files not working for Home folder.
Hi All,
We have a Windows server 2003 domain. We have used
The "Home Folder" setting in our users' accounts to
automatically set up a mapped drive. This is working
fine. However, on Windows 7 clients, files and folders
in the Home folder cannot be marked as
"Always available offline" -the option does not show
in the context menu. Files and folders in other,
manually mapped, locations can be marked always available
offline.
Can anyone explain how we can make files and folders
in the Home folder be available offline?
Cheers,
Geoff
PS We do not want to use folder redirection. Our network
is very version heterogenious and previous experience
with folder redirection has been poor because of this.

Hi,
No takers huh? OK I'll try to add more detail...
How we are setting this up currently:
On the Domain controller, we run dsa.msc
Right a user account
Choose Properties
Click the Profile tab
In the Home folder section select "Connect"
and set the Z drive to \\Machine\sharename\<username>
When the user logs on, they see their Home folder
mapped correctly and they are able to read and write
to it. When they right click on any network location
they see the "Always available offline" option in
the context menu, but not on any location under their
home folder.
I have confirmed this is also a problem for those using
XP Pro as well.
Could this be by design somehow?? Anyone any ideas?
Cheers,
Geoff

Hi,
Thanks for the pos!
On Windows Server 2003, Offline files are disabled by default. Please refer to:
Folder Redirection Overview.
Meanwhile, if you have any other server problems, please ask in
Windows Server Forum.
Regards,
Miya

Hi Miya,
Thanks for the repsonse but I don't think you understood my question.
The Offline files menu option is not showing on the clients, i.e. offline files
is not showing on Windows XP and Windows 7 Ultimate.

Geoff

Hi All,
Apologies.
I forgot to set the Offline Settings on the Share.
On the server:
Right click the share, then click:
Sharing and Security...>Caching
Select "Only the files and programs that users specify will be available offline".
Curiously I had to reboot my client PC to make the CscService take notice of
the change. :s It is working now though.
Cheers,
Geoff
