Offline files not syncing but can't be turned off
We have a SBS 2003 network with mostly Win XP machines, a few Windows 7 Pro (32 and 64 bit). Users' document folders are redirected to a share on a file server. Since adding Windows 7 computers, offline files are causing a problem. We have users who "float" and use both the XP and Win 7 workstations, and they are reporting that they get different versions of a document when opening it from an XP machine versus a Win 7 machine. On the XP machines, we had turned off offline files as synchronization was causing problems. Apparently this is enabled by default under Windows 7. However, if so, it isn't working as the files are not being synchronized automatically, and don't sync even when I try to do it manually. Now we have many, many documents stored in offline folders that are creating confusion for the staff who float and are unable to access the most current version of their document. My preference would be to disable offline files completely, but I can't do it at the user's workstation, as the Disable Offline Files button is grayed out. If I can't disable it, I have to find a way to get the files to syc. I also am concerned about losing files for users who aren't aware that they have offline versions of their files. Basically this is a mess, and why the service is enabled by default is something I don't understand. What is the best way to get this resolved? Thanks in advance.

If a domain contains both Windows XP and Windows Vista\Windows 7 clients, the user profiles saved from Windows 7 clients will be named with V2. Windows XP and Windows 7 cannot share a same user profile. From the first one, I am getting that I need to apply certain settings on specific folders at the Win 7 clients for each user profile who might also log on to an XP client? This needs to be done at each Win 7 workstation? We are not using roaming profiles, only folder redirection. I would have expected even more complaints about this from more users if the behavior is really as described in these articles. Only one user has reported any problems with documents not being synced. Would it be a simpler option to enable offline files at the XP workstation?
