Offline files: complete disaster with Windows 7
For the last several years I have been using offline files with WindowsXP. The files were being stored on a SAMBA (linux) server and at each logon and logoff the files would be synchronised to the WinXP systems. Wonderfull! Lots of brownie points earned there! Then dark times arrived. Having people in the world forcing you to use a new operating system, I too had to "move back" to Windows 7. Since then, I have waisted 4 weeks long my time, trying to solve stuff that has always been working without a single problem. With WindowsXP that is. Several error messages seem to randomly occur when synchronisation starts. Either files can not be saved because they are being used by an other process. Messages saying files are deleted on the server side but have been changed on the local side. Or the system cannot find the file specified. Quite often when I was trying to solve an error for a particular file I was working on, causes a domino effect and hundreds of files will give a conflict. I have read so many forums with tips with changing registries, changing configuration settings on the SAMBA server etc. All without success. What irritates me the most is that I am not able to DISABLE the offline files completely. Somehow various offline files remain offline BUT you are not allowed to touch them. Ooh no! Instead I have to tweak, shake, rain dance and .... well you know what to get the files completely gone. Thanks MS for speeding up the boot time :-) Anyway, today I decided to give up on this shining new OS which has actually some very good stuff onboard! Although I still do not like it to be treated like a n00b all the time... Although, maybe I am huh? I can't even get these offline files working... duh! Petty but I have to get back to my own work again. Ow, I almost forgot, I'm suppose to ask a question. At least that is what it says on top of this screen. Who did manage to get Windows 7 to work with offline files on a SAMBA server (3.4.4). Tell me you're hocus pocus, pleasssse! Cheerz, Robbert

This should be a compatibility issue. If the share is on a Windows computer, there should not be any issues. I suggest you change the NTLM authentication related policies and check the result again. Please open gpedit.msc from Start Search box, and then find the policy: Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Network security: LAN Manager authentication level Please change to “Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated”. If the issue persists, please temporary disable the antivirus and then check the result again.Arthur Xie - MSFT
