Offline file issues - Win 7 Pro Client 2003 server
There are some similar, but not clearly relavent posts, so I am going new here. I am testing a handfull of Win 7 Pro PCs in a medium enterprise environment. We have 2003 Server (mult hosts) used for Active Directory, Exchange 2003, File/Print sharing, and other server purposes. On the test Win 7 client machines, I have a mapped drive to the user file location. Although I have search/indexing enabled on the user file shares, 7 will not allow me to include this location as a "Library" unless I enable offline files including that folder. Once I do that, the users are seeing the files as available, but not synced. Sometimes, but not always, a log-off or restart will synchronize changes made at the desktop with the server. Also, some times the user is getting error messages indicating that the files are not available at all. This is creating problems where the primary user is making changes, which are not immediately (or in any sort of predictable time frame) replicating to the server, where the same files are acecssed by other users. One thing that I have also noticed on this. If I use the "run" option and invoke the server hosting the share via\\servername I only see the shared folders and subfolders whcih are involved in offline files on that client machine, with the cached\changed state. If I invoke the server using the IP address, I can see all of the shares, and the current server contents. These are wired LAN connected desktop systems, so the only purpose for enabling offline files at all is to be able to include these locations in the "Library" structure. I would prefer to be able to disable offline at the desktop if I could figure out what I am missing to be able to use them as "Library" locations without it.

Hi, From your description, there are several issues encountered. I suggest we troubleshoot them one by one. First, if you want to add the network file to library, it need to be “Always available Offline” or you may try the steps which Dale provided in the following similar thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproui/thread/8975fb07-26ea-455e-b8b9-40bf33662502 Regarding the synchronization issue, if you do a manual sync on that share does it sync successfully? Also, what is the status on your sync center? You may refer to the following KB article to check if it helps: The icon of an offline file that you changed in offline mode always indicates that synchronization is successful even when the synchronization fails on a client computer that is running Windows 7 Note: this hotfix is also include in the Windows 7 Service Pack 1, you may also install the SP1 to test. Regarding the other folder which include in the share server but not available offline cannot be accessed via \\servername, I cannot reproduce this issue on my test machine. I would like to confirm that if all the computers in this medium enterprise environment encountered this issue and please check the other system version. Also, please temporarily disable the third party security programs to test. Regards, Sabrina TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. The synch center is showing "offline, synch needed" even though the client PC is wired LAN, connected in the same IP space, same AD domain. Further, on the PC that prompted the post, this morning, user is unable to save ("permissions issue") after opening an existing file. Again some sort of "location unavailable" message. As to the UNC vs. IP share, I am currently only seeing that in this one machine, but have seen the same pattern on occasion, usually on my own XP based portable when I have been roaming or connect via VPN (when the machine is authenticated using cached credentials and the connection to the AD This is intermitent, although appears to be fairly prevalent in the one case. I have identified the issue on at least one occasion on two of three Windows 7 Prof. 32 bit systems that have been deployed in a mixed test/production scenario (along with 1 64 bit.) Although we do not have plans to expand the deployment of Win 7 at this time, I am anticipating the probability that, within the next 12 months one of our critical application vendors will release a version update which will force that decision on us. I (wisely, I think) have chosen to deploy initial implementations in the offices whcih are located in the same building/same floor as my own.

Tried the GPO solution suggested above, now I cannot even uncheck the "Always Available. . ." option in the folder properties.

Firstly, It is not possible to index network shares in Win7. So CSC is your only option. When you mention, that the shares work well with IP and not with Name, couple of things that come to mind : Name resolution issues kerberos authentication issues - When using IP, NTLM is used instead of kerberos.Sumesh P - Microsoft Online Community Support
