Offline Folders constantly transitioning to Offline/Disconnected state
I am having an issue with a Windows 7 SP1 machine and offline files. Let's say \\Server01\Users\username is the share that is available offline. When attempting to access documents in the user share, the "Offline Status" is usually listed as "Disconnected" in the Explorer window. When opening up Sync Center, it also shows that the Offline Files are "Disconnected" in its listed "Status". While this occurs however, the server is available on the network. It can be pinged as well as other non-offline shares accessed seamlessly. The Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles operational log file shows that the path to the folder is being connected ever 2 minutes, only to be disconnected about 5 seconds later - not to reconnect for another 2 minutes. See the following events which happen continuously: Information 2/7/2012 2:30:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:30:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:28:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:28:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:26:10 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:26:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:24:09 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:24:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:22:08 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:22:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:20:08 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:20:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:18:07 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:18:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:16:06 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:16:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:14:06 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:14:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:12:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:12:05 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 10 None "Path reconnected. \\dc01\Users" Information 2/7/2012 2:10:06 PM Microsoft-Windows-OfflineFiles 9 None "Path disconnected. (NOTE: I have done some additional testing and in some cases the share may stay connected for up to 30-35 seconds before disconnecting again in the same pattern above) I found some information here from a Jill Zoeller at MSFT. She seems to indicate there is an online/offline transitioning that is supposed to take place every 2 minutes. It would seem that the process described does reconnect (transition) the files into an online state every 2 minutes, only to be disconnected again immediately! This is over a wireless connection, and although latencies can sometimes jump very high (>500ms) for short periods of time, I have let pings run while this is happening and in general each packet is <20 ms in latency (and usually <5ms). This should not trigger the 80ms latency interval of the slow-link detection. My problem seems exactly like the issue described in KB981872 however that KB has been rolled into SP1 and my rdbss.sys file is a higher revision than that from this hotfix. There don't seem to be any other indications of problems in the log files (I have enabled Analytic, Debug, and SyncLog on the OfflineFiles log). Looking back over the past 3 days I have one or two 1004/1005 events which are transitional latency messages, but these don't seem to be the cause of these contant disconnects. Please advise as to how to further troubleshoot/solve this issue. The logs state that a disconnect is happening, but don't explain why. Since the network seems to be functioning normally during this whole process, I don't think that anything else is interferring with my connections to the servers. Thanks.

We have the same problem here and I am at the same point in researching it: Connection type : LAN , security .1x enabled on switches Win2008R2 AD Domain, DFS activated Win7-64Bit Clients (latest patchlevel) have Redirected Folders Policy activated, which automatically enables offline Files for these folders. KB981872. The effect on the client side: a) the network drives cannot be mapped after logon b) the dfs root path is unavailable for the client c) all servers can be ping'ed d) in event log the offline files connect and disconnect permanently e) when offline files are disabled, everything works fine. rdbss.sys file version was checked and found to be higher. DFScache was cleared via dfsutil. The bad thing about all this is the missing information in the debug logs. The best starting point would be a detailled view on the errors that Offline Files throw while trying to connect to a DFS path / AD / whatever. Any hint on how to get more significant debug information on this issue will be greatly appreciated. This will also help to clarify if it is a real bug or a configuration issue. Also a link or document describing the logon process including the process of bringing up "offline files" will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hi, we are currently experiencing the same hickups and are also at this point in debugging. Has anyone opened a ticket with MS about this? Regards, Martin

Ben-IS do you have DirectAccess enabled? I found that when removing my machine from the DirectAccess Client GPO, everything returned to normal operation... Regards, Martin

Been having this problem happen ever since installing Windows 7. I redirect documents to my server box (also running Win7 ultimate) and randomly it will just go offline. I can access a seperate share containing music which is not redirected and it works fine. Only the redirected, and therefore synced, folders have this problem. It's particularly frusturating when it goes offline when I'm trying to save a new version of a flash applcation I'm working on since flash cannot save and then breaks such that it won't save to my local desktop either. When this happens, sync always says offline. Sometimes I can right click the sync center by the clock and choose "sync all" and it will then come back online. Too bad flash is already broken by then, but at least it comes back online. Today it won't even do that and I expect that I'll have to reboot to fix it. Where is poke button to make it does it's check?

We have the same issue here too. Frequent disconnects of home drive leaving any files which are not available offline inaccessible. Causes certain applications which store data on the home drive in non-offline locations to crash. No signs of any network issue or problems at the storage end and this does not occur on Windows XP systems which connect to exactly the same shares.

Hi, Win7x64 Clients, Win2008R2 Domain: We "solved" our problem by re-initializing the Offline Folder Cache where necessary. By setting this key once on the faulting machine, the cache reset is performed at next reboot. After that everything is running fine again: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\CSC] "FormatDatabase"=dword:00000001 For details on this switch - see this link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproui/thread/9c89236e-a315-4755-b642-070c120a0448 Which leads _me_ to the conclusion that the Offline Folder Cache is preventing proper handling of the network drives / redirected folders / DFS access, when the cache is faulty at startup for some reason. Hope this workaround is helping some people.

Hi, I'm facing the same issue as Ben-IS, on several desktops and laptops running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1 (+ latest updates) when connecting to my network shares hosted on a Synology NAS DiskStation running DSM 4.1 (i.e. Linux kernel + Samba). The network share I've configured for Offline availability actually turns to "connected" every 2 minutes and then disconnects after 5-7 seconds and becomes unavailable until the next round, while other shares (stored on the same NAS box) remain available. The problem could be reproduced on all desktops/laptops I've tried so far (all running Win7 Ultimate 64bit SP1). DrMED: re-initializing the Offline Folder Cache did not help, but thanks for the tip. Ben-IS: did you manage to solve this problem on your side? Regards, -Alain
