Tassiedevil - It sounds like there may have been a registryissue with the association of Word files with Word 2007 when you installed it.Opening the file by going through Word, or for that matter, drag/dropping the file from Explorer into Word use a slightly different process. When you click on a document file like a .DOC or .DOCX file, Windows checks the registry for the associated program. In this case it's MS Word. Windows tells Word to open the file you clicked on and where to find it. Word opens and then opens the file. So... What you can do about it? Three things come to mind. You can either attempt to repair the association OR you can try repairing your Office 2007 installation OR you can uninstall Office 2007 completely and then reinstall it. The first option can be done by going into the Default Programs icon on the Start Menu, clicking on the 2nd option down (Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program). You can find the afflicted document type and click on it, and then click on the Change program button on top. A dialog box will appear listing programs that are recommended with opening DOC or DOCX files and you can Select Word 2007 again. Click OK and Close and see if it works. If it doesnt't work, try repairing the Office 2007 installation by inserting the CD and selecting the Repair option (if available). If it isn't, you can uninstall and reinstall Office using the same CD.

Thanks for this.1. I had initially installed Word Viewer;2. I subsequently installed Office 2007. The file association still referenced Word viewer.3. changed it back to Word 2007 has fixed the problem. icons are affected - but I'll have a crack at that one.thanks
