Office 2003 on Windows 7 hangs due to network PCs appearing in Look In / Save In dialog box
Hi all, We've encountered an issue with Office 2003, testing in Excel, where the locations available to save to or open from list all network PCs on the domain, therefore it causes Excel to hang for about a minute while the PC browses the network. This is only with this combination (Office 2003 and Windows 7) that this behaviour is present in our environment. I've reviewed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313937 but the cause is definitely because the network is being searched for PCs - I've disconnected all mapped drives to rule this out. I've seen posts about hiding your PC from Network Locations, however I can't find anything to either fix this issue, or to hide all other network computers from one PC. Screenshot shows an example of the results of the Look In box. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Did you install the Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8)? It will ensure the best compatibility with Windows 7. Bye.Luigi Bruno

Ok, I've narrowed it down to being an issue with Group Policy and specifically turning the firewall off for Domain networks. The problems exists whichever way you turn the firewall off, whether through: Admin Templates -> Network -> Network Connections -> Windows Firewall -> Domain Profile -> Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections = Disabled or Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Windows Firewall with Advanced Security So I can work around the issue by leaving the firewall turned on, but this isn't ideal because our infrastructure has been configured so that the Windows firewall can be turned off as it tends to cause more problems than it solves. Any ideas?

Hi, You can try to test the issue in Clean Boot mode to check whether this is a third party conflict issue. In addition, since this issue in occurred in Office 2003, I suggest you post this issue in Microsoft Office for further discussion. The reason why we recommend posting appropriately is you will get the most qualified pool of respondents, and other partners who read the forums regularly can either share their knowledge or learn from your interaction with us. Thank you for your understanding. Regards Vincent Wang TechNet Community Support
