Novell Client
Is there a Novell Client available for trial yet? Would love one ASAP.
June 20th, 2006 11:43pm

The official word from Novell on this is (although it may change): "Novell will release a preview client for Vista 60-90 days after Vista releases. There will also be a Vista64 client. But there will never be an XP-64 client due to XP-64 missing key bits of the network stack." Apparantly the login routines and network layer are consistantly changing with each Vista release and it is difficult for Novell to release a stable client without having to rebuild it with each vista update.

Is there any other way to run the beta version on a Novell Network?
June 25th, 2006 10:28pm

If you mean is there a way to use Vista to log in and access Novell resources, then I believe that the answer is no. I have already tested the Novell client, and like you found that the current build won't install. I have tried to install the GroupWise client (6.5.6) and it won't install, and the Zen client won't work either. At this point, we are using Vista in our network, but in a very limited fashion. I can understand why Novell wouldn't want to release any code at this point, but it is frustrating. Just my .02 cents.

Same problem here - but loading remote control software to connect to an XP box with the Novell Client installed is how I'm handling it. I don't do much on the Novell side but create the occasional account and reset passwords, so it's not a big issue to me anyway. Looks like the remaining Novell servers are scheduled for migration to Windows before long, so the problem will cease to existBe Nice to Nerds - You just might end up working for one. (Bill Gates - 2004 - unverified).

What really grinds my gears is the Beta versions are for testing right? How can you test your network environment with Vista if you dont have any client to install? I have installed Vista on a couple occations and can find drivers and such for other things (Video, both ati and nvidia). I know this rant will fall on def ears but it does make me feel better. So, I might as well just scrap the Vista beta disk and wait for the full release. Hopefully Novell will jump on board and finally start caring about their customer base and not JUST the bottom line. There I feel better.Thank you all for lisening :)

Hey all, I'm facing the exact same problem. Have everything running on my Vista machine, have been happy with it so far except the glass feature didn't work for me. So seriously, Doesn't Microsoft have the Microsoft Services for NetWare available for us to install & connect to our Novell shares? I would think that was the solution, but don't see it available in the network connection install options....

I have the client installed and I brought up the Novell Login from the red N. The problem I have is that I can see the tree when I try to browse for it.

I have the same problem. I right click the N go to login and try to select my tree and nothing comes up. I've even typed the names for tree context and server in and it will not connect.
February 20th, 2007 6:32pm

I was finally able to get it to work by putting the IP address of one of the servers in the server line after clicking the advanced button.

I can walk the Tree's no problem. I did disable Micro$oft's Firewall though. ;)

I tried disabling the firewall but I still couldn't walk the tree. I guess at least I was able to get in by using the IP for the server.

Dear Nathan: Did you put the server name and context with the server name or only server name as it asks for the tree and context before you have the server. I tried what you suggested, but still no luck. Can you again suggest some concrete steps? I'm dying to get access to the novell server where I have all working documents. Regards, Zubair

Nathan and Zubair,If using Vista x64 you should be connecting to a server running Netware 6.5 sp5 with NSS sp5a patch. If you are putting in the IP into the tree field of the client usually because issue with SLP. In the preferences of the client if you can put in the address of the SLPDA on the network and check static you should be able to browse the Tree, context and servers.Hope this helps,Bill

Make a firewall exception for port 427 TCP and UDP, your tree browse may not work still, but you should be able to log on.I have also found that you have to let windows finish loading before you try to login, or you will get all sorts of "Cannot Find Tree or Server" errors.

I seem to be able to log in with the preview, but it does not seem to provide network administrator support (permissions for files/folders, etc...). Is this the case, or did I miss something in the install?
April 26th, 2007 6:58pm

I installed the client beta on 2 vista systems. On one system, it allows the user to connect. The other system Blue screens after the novell login is finished. ouch

There is a Vista Client and it is in the Beta 2 stage. I beleive that is what everyone was talking about in this particular thread. I have had to do some tweaks but it seems to be working about 90%. The client does not integrate with windows as it did in the past, so you will need to log into windows then log into the server separately. Add the login32.exe file to the start-up folder to get the login on start up and you have to manually enter the IP of the server for the tree and manually enter the context and server name. The client will not find the server by discovery. Office 2007 is the only issue I am having, as far as saving documents to the Novell Server. I am still trying to find a solution for saving office documents to the server. I contacted Microsoft's supportand they could not help me find a solution either. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi,Your suggestions are great! Now I can log in (manually enter the IP of the server for the tree) and I can send message to users, but I can NOT receive messages from users, can you?
