Not able to take backup on external drive.
Original title: Backup and Open backed up files;I have just startde to use Office 2007 with Windows XP Pro. I am trying to do a backup to my external Drive "F". When I try to open the file or folder on that drive by R/Clicking>Open, it takes me back to the Backup & Restore Wizard instead. The window which opens when I R/click the file/folder on the F Drive is different then before; It shows an "Edit"choice at the top, followed by "Open", followed by "7-Zip", "Open with" "Scan with", "Send To" etc. No "Explore". I was unable to open the folder or file in any other method given. To do the Backup I am using the Backup Wizard and have used both, the Advanced and Regular method. On the F-Drive the Icon of the Backup shows up but it seems to be empty or such. What am I doing wqrong? I need your HELP, Please and Thank You: HDScala

Hi HDScala,· What kind of files you are trying to backup?· Were you able to take backup on this external drive earlier?It seems that some files are corrupted in the external drive.a) I would recommend you to take a backup of the data present in the external drive to any other device & format the external drive.You may connect the external drive to some other computer & check if you are able to access the data. If the data is accessible, you may take a backup of the data in any external device.b) Thereafter, try to backup your files on the external drive & check if the issue persists.Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.RegardsDebleena SMicrosoft Answers Support EngineerVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

I need your HELP, Please and Thank You: HDScalaWhen using windows back-up utility the format of the files are changed to .bfk for back-up purposes. It is normal for the wizard to open when you click to open the file on your drive F. You must use the wizard to restore and/or open a particular file. You cannot explore the files. There is nothing wrong with your files or your computer in respect to the issue you raise.I don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points. If this post helps you, vote. Hi Deblena S, Thank you for your help. I have been backing up with my previous computer, WIN XP Pro and Office 2003, and have been able to open and work with the folder and files which I have backed up, including copy and paste to "C" drive. I also found all the backups in "Recent Documents" which I openned from the My Computer Tree. I seem to have several "My Documents" in My Computer tree. One at the very top under "Desktop" then when I open the "My Computer>Local C>Documents and settingd>user> there is "My Documents" and "Recent Documents". In this Recent Documents" I found all the Backups I took before. Lots of Icons, old "F"Drive folders and several duplicates of Icons. I have to sort these and clean up.Why do these backups end up in Recent Documents? Thos recently done backups also send me back to the backup wizard. I will try to use my old computer to check the F drive but I dont think it will work. If you have any other suggestions please be so kind and let me know. Then there is another "HDS's Documents" as the last folder just above "my network places" in the Tree as an individual folder it seems.Thank You very much again, HDScala

Hi JoelJ1964,Thank you so much for your help. Before using this laptop, I used my previous computer with WIN XP Pro and Office 2003. There I was able to back up to the external drive F and then open and work with the folders or files, as in Copy and paste to C drive whatever I needed. Does Office 2007 not work the same? I am using Windows XP pro here as well. Also, I seem to have several "My Documents" folders on "My Computer" Tree. One at the very top under Desktop, then under "User" in Documents and Settings I have "My Documents" and "Recent Documents". In this last folder I found all the backups, lots of Icons, the actual Backup Folder containing only 1KB and most seem to be shortcuts. I simply don't know what is happening here, although some files and or folders are containing info I saved to My Documents previously.How do I find out what a folder contains when I am returned to the Backup Wizard, follow the wizard and will the file or folder just restore? will I be able to see what restored?Any suggestions or help or advise I would appreciate very much; Kind Regards, HDScala;

Using the back-up utility is not the same as copying and pasting. When using the back-up utility an image is created similar to that in the image on the link below. When using copy and paste you are able to immediately access, open and edit the file. The back-up utility does not work in the same manner. It compresses the files you chose to back-up then creates an image of the same. There is no option to change the format the utility uses to backs up the files.http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9417/backupimage.jpgThe link below is a tutorial on using windos xp back-up utility.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/bott_03july14.mspxAs to the multiple "My Document" folders you are seeing, there is such a folder for each user account on the computer including the default admin account. These folders are perfectly normal.The only thing strange you have pointed out is the fact you are seeing the individual files in Recent Documents. You should only see the image created by the back-up utility as well as those documents you have physically accessed. I don't vote for myself I'm not here for the points.
